Quality of Photos for Critique gone downhill??

To be honest I reckon this will be over soon, all this posting will get his classifieds under 50% ;)

MOD EDIT: HIS CLASSIFIEDS RATIO HASN'T GONE UN-NOTICED BY US, BUT THAT WAS A REALLY GOOD GUESS :)

As I stated on another thread, I've seen that photo stream, and although it's nice, pretty little pictures, nicely posed and exposed for the most part... but it's nothing that stands out as being exemplary, and certainly doesn't warrant the pompousness and arrogance that you have displayed throughout this thread and the other. Take yourself down a few pegs, mate. You're really coming across as not a very nice person at all, and that's a shame.

But congratulations on the big thread view and posts!

Did I post my flickr images for critique? Did I post a link trying to show off?? No.... oh and just to make it clear I'm not your mate. Im outside the circle ;)

I don't think it's just putting his head over the ramparts that has resulted in a few pee'd off posters, his initial point re crit was valid. It's more that he put his head above it, and gave most of us the finger with his condescending attitude.

Talk about ruining a valid discussion point.

He's not just suggesting that they're not doing very well though is he?
He's made a rod for his own back with his arrogance. Just my opinion.

Oh I think there's more than enough attitude from all sides of this point of debate going around to perfectly derail this debate not just from Matt, more than a few people have been perfectly happy to take shots across his bow also, some don't however seem best pleased when shots are returned

Hmmm. Have you read it all?

A Mod now normally comes in insults a few people and then closes the thread

and another Mod likes his posting
Surely it would be better if a mod limited the number of posts on a thread to just two per poster when it becomes heated? If there's software that can do that of course. By limiting the number of posts (per poster) it means the thread can probably continue to trundle along and people will stick to the subject more than having a mud fight.

Just a thought.

Boom!!
Judging by previous post history I suspect that's not far off the mark :D

I'd like to have looked at your previous postings, but you're of the 'paranoid' variety who doesn't even like there own profile to be viewed.

So of course, it makes it difficult for anyone to take context for your comments.

For the record, the shot that you started this with does nothing for me either, however I disagree with your critique of it hugely. Street photography is no place for 'adding a touch of fill'. I don't comment on street (and many other areas) because I'm no expert, maybe sticking to what you know is a good thing. Or perhaps you could open up to the world and show us how a great street image should look?

Instead, you sit in an ivory tower throwing excrement on those you see as 'beneath' you. Frankly it's not helping anyone - and that is what people find frustrating.

Easy to see past posts without going through the full profile Phil.
Just hit the avatar then messages.

Im beginning to know how Katie Hopkins feels

To be fair, Katie Hopkins is an attention whore who says and writes things just for the reaction, it's definitely a sign of being unhinged. Was this your point? Are you enjoying this?

I remember a Mary Hopkin - "Those were the days (my friend)" - but never heard of Katie, does she take pictures of dogs?

I think that 500px views/likes/pulse give you a good idea of what the general public and other togs think of your work.
No it doesn't. Not in any meaningful way. It's all based on algorithms and your personal behaviour on the site. Don't be fooled into using it as a comparison tool.
its not about getting a pat on the back and a ego boost.
Yes it is.
It give you a good idea of what work is popular. In this game popular images sell. No point trying to sell your work or go far in this line of work if no-one likes your images. except for yourself.
Ok I think we've finally established how you define success. FYI it's very different to how I would define it. It's not work for me.

Like I said, I was originally with you on your comments around quality of posts on this site. I searched and saw the posts you were talking about (it wasn't the "hard stare" thread) and believe you had a valid point. You've completely lost me subsequently though, especially with your use of social media sites as a way of defining good photographers and a very narrow view of how to assess images at a technical level.

That said I still believe you are entitled to your own opinions and I think you should be free to express them, even at the risk of offending some people.

I just think its amusing how most of you jump on the band wagon and throw all sorts of insults at me and when I react, Im out of order.

This ^^^^ totally...you take images for yourself and what you like, if others like them too that's just a bonus

So if their just for yourself why post them on here for critique? Contradicting yourself a bit now

Doesn't someone stand out on the discourteous front?

More than one stands out to me, I'll not name them, but some of them know who they are I'm sure, it's interesting at least to me that it doesn't seem to matter who is starting a debate there's always a core few who seem to need to make sure they are the ones to finish it...it often matters not where or what that debate is about...it's probably deep down some form of physiological disorder

Think of it as less of a bandwagon, and more of a group of many people sharing a similar view of monumental arrogance.

So if you post a image on 500px and people like it or comment on it etc, one particular image gets very popular and much interest this in no way indicates it is popular with the public??
It does work on algorithms, but its all to do with likes per view etc. This indicates a image that stands out and people like.

Might not be a disorder but rather that they've been under the thumb all week and only have TP to let off their frustration.

My wife and daughter have been talking about kitchens all day

this thread is really light relief

I'm with you Matt

"Illegitimi non carborundum" ... changing one word to "buggers"

It doesn't indicate it's a brilliant image though, just that people like it. There's a chasm between brilliant (technically or artistically) and popular.

I'd find kitchens more interesting, laminate or wood? :D

expensive - in fact rip off's - my daughter and husband are buying a new house - the kitchen is good - but she now says she won't have it unless she can change the kitchen - is there enough money on the "spreadsheet"?

Are kitchen salesmen as bad as used car salesmen?

Let me elaborate.... My point is, say myself for example, I'll shoot what I like, what interests me, I may post for critique but that's not contradicting anything.
I don't scour Flickr or 500px or any other sites and just shoot what is deemed popular.

I wonder if the United players used to tell Alex Ferguson to get on the pitch and show them how to play when he told them what he thought?
