Ok, so I have a Q-strap with handstrap attached to a L-plate. I leave my Giottos MH642 QR plate attached all the time. I like the ergonomics of the Q-strap, but I just don't trust it. Too many reports of failures. The QR has served me well but is now getting a bit loose. And the QR on top of the L-plate is a bit clumsy.

So can I solve all three problems in one go? Is there a QR system that will fit on a Giottos ballhead and has loops that will take a quality sling and handstrap?

this is my solution - I use a quick release plate designed for my camera - admittedly expensive and then swiss clamps (from the far east) on all my tripods, even pocket ones - these clamps will fit any ballhead as take both imperial tripod threads or the metric 6mm (?) bolt used on some ballheads. The plate has a slot you can attach a loop to, I attach another loop to the standard strap eyelit. Then use two swivel connectors from these to the strap - this gives ample insurance in case of any failure.

Thanks Tim. Is that a Kirk plate?

yes it is a kirk one and as mine fits to the battery grip even dearer than the usual one, must confess it is very nicely made though. The clamps are much cheaper though - about £8 each and seemed just as good as the more expensive branded ones.

Tim_uk, those loops are just what I'm looking for to put on my Hexar, can you tell me where you got them?

hiya, they are op/tech loops so you should find them most places, I got mine from amazon - about 6 notes - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000IN3RUE

Hi tim_uk,

Would like to adapt this idea for my use but cannot work out how you managed to fit the second swivel clamp onto the black rapid strap. My strap doesn't appear to have an open end to feed the clamp onto the strap.

Could you let me in on the secret - bet its going to be so simple and Im going to be left feeling terribly embarrassed for asking.

Regards
Neil

I've decided Arca-Swiss type QR is the way to go. But will one fit on my Giottos ballhead? Is this a standard fitting or are those two lugs a Giottos special? I've read Giottos Arca-Swiss adaptors have compatibility problems with other plates, so would rather use a different make.

most QR clamps have a slot or even a double slot to cater for the lugs - they are designed to prevent the clamp turning and eventually unscrewing - therefore try to see a photo of the underside first. If the underside is flat it is possible to add a slot assuming you have access to tools etc.

genuine blackrapid straps have an open end but it is often under the padded shoulder rest so not immediately obvious - just make a note of the route the strap takes so you can put it all back neatly.

the copy one I had had the end stitched double so this needed undoing before it could pass through the buckles and then needed resewing.

Hi thanks for your reply.

Looks like Ive been shafted by Amazon. No open end on mine despite ordering what was advertised as a genuine BR strap. Now worried to use the strap Im now lumbered with.

Maybe some of the black rapids are different, when I bought mine there were a few different models.
