Well tonight I'm licking my wounds and thinking just how catastrophic it is when digital fails. My NAS seems to have developed what I now am thinking is a hardware issue. Problem is, you need to be a computing genius to suss it out. Had to employ a mate to help retrieve some files and install new firmware which hasn't worked. Looks like I'm going to have to send it back.

Just to add salt to an already sore wound, the files I have dumped onto an external drive appear as corrupted or damaged in LR. Really fed up and not sure how I'm going to get some prints done this side of Christmas for a present.

Have done that once already Neil. Ive had enough today but am going to have to explore this tomorrow night, just too fed up tonight.

Hi Daniel,

Well it all started with my QNAP not being found on my home network. Through various reading around and contact with their support team if was suggested that the firmware needed updating after a reset. The online instructions are poor. I got so far but ended up having a mate help me Monday night. He got everything done except the last bit which was mounting the ISO file. Apparently it's not possible the way which they advise.

My secondary objective then, was to recover my files. Following much faffing around we managed to copy them onto an external drive. I think having a very quick look this morning not all detail has copied over properly for some reason. Seems to be my DNG files that are 'corrupted or damaged.' Need to look at later but the original drives are still at his place, 50 mile away....

469L Neil.

Up until around a year ago I was copying my files to an old machine that I handed down to my parents. Since moving away, I haven't continued that.

I dumped around 300gb of photos onto my external, then transferred onto my macs hdd. Used Ubuntu to read the files from the drive in my friends 4 bay enclosure. It was quite temperamental as they wouldn't read in other drives. My friend is quite clued up but not with Linux so we've got to the point it's going to have to go back. It's 18 months old so out of warranty, QNAP have said I need to go back to the supplier which was Amazon but doesn't seem to be a route now out of the warranty period. Waiting back on an email now from QNAP.

Hi Neil,
To be honest, a device not being found a network points to a configuration issue - either with the device itself or a wireless access point/router, if that's what you are using on your home network. I couldn't imagine a firmware update itself would resolve that unless there is a specific bug that the new firmware remedies - in which case that would be documented in the release notes.

For anyone else in this position, I'd recommend making a full backup of the data on your NAS box and then testing it before committing to a firmware upgrade.

What RAID configuration were the drives set up in? Were they mirrored at all? If so, It should be possible to attach one of the drives and set-up a degraded mirror using MDADM. Where are you based?

Actually, I see your in Telford - I've got to pop over there on Saturday although I doubt I'd have time to swing by and doing anything to help. However, just before new year I possibly could?

Hi Daniel,

Very kind of you. I haven't updated my profile, I've been in Redditch for 6 months now.

The drives are mirrored, have only been using two.

Kris

I pass Stafford regularly with work so if you could assist it would be very much appreciated.

Okay, I'm sure we can sort something out for the week commencing 29th December, if you aren't already sorted by then.
I'll get a linux box with some spare SATA ports spun up in anticipation.

If you've got a spare external hard disk drive for restoring your data to, that would be handy.
Lets cross everything that your underlying data is not corrupted on both mirrored disks.

Super Dan, can't thank you enough, very good of you indeed!

The QNAP is still at my friends in Telford at the moment. Typically, I'm going away on the 28th for a week. But I'm not in any immediate rush just want to have a plan so that someone who knows what's what can help me with this mess. I do have a spare external hard drive no problem. It's good to know that there's some genuine good people out there.
