No
Just realised that apart from football WC 2022, Qatar will be holding a Handball World Cup in 2015:gag: WHY?? Handball in Qatar is as popular as camel racing in England!
But thats not all volleyball federation FIVB organised The Volleyball Club World Championships 2010.......yes in Qatar:cuckoo: This could be compared to champions league final, as I expected there were little crowds watching those games. In Europe countries with volleyball culture can easily fill 12k 15k venues.
I dont want even want to mention world`s athletics in 2010 in Doha.
I understand that both handball and volleyball are not the major sports in UK but just imagine The Ashes being played in... Doha.
Why is it that country with very little sport tradition gets so many of the best tournaments?? Can oilr really pay for anything, it looks like it can.
Well it looks to me that many more world`s sport federations are as corrupt as FIFA is.

Btw AFC Asian Cup 2011 is being held .......yes in Qatar :naughty: If you didnt watch any games there is plenty of highlights on YouTube, see those massive crowds for yourself :)

well, my total experience of Doha / Qatar, is 6 hours in its vermin / cockroach infested airport awaiting a connecting flight to SA.......

from that experience, I am in no hurry to head back there.........

Are you saying that they only won these due to dodgy brown envelopes... :suspect:

No they won these due to large financial contributions to the sports governing bodies and free 9 star (or whatever they are up to) hotels for the sports top people to enjoy....

Watch out, someone could be offended by those comments!

The UAE has run out of oil and is now investing the money the black gold earned them into tourism. One major way of getting people to your country is to hold major sporting events there. There is now a lot of motorsport in the UAE, football is very popular, and gold has a big hold there too. They also have fantastic beaches & hotels.

Obviously they feel that free holidays for decision makers and brown envelopes are all part of doing business.

Hmmm I will never know that for sure, but lets be fair, so far all of the tournaments Qatar held were on small not even the most modern venues with very small crowds. Mind that Qatar`s population is about 2 million people.
Someone could say about tourist potential... But i dont think that with the culture difference it will ever be a favourite destination for many of the not Muslim people. And when it comes to sports its so much better to watch it with some real supporters in the stands.

Juat breathe a sigh of relief that the UK didn't win the world cup - I see that the costs are expected to rise to $100 billion - double the estimated cost in qatar's official bid. (Source, today's Times - free since I bought a magazine.)

It looks like the infrastructure and stadiums will be built from gold.
