Looking at non Apple tablets and all seem to use Android in various versions. Can I also put my own software on them or do I need to go the Microsoft Windows route?

I need Office, my site design software (Coffee Cup) Photoshop and Clementine music player

There a variety of tablets from different manufacturers that run Windows 8.1
This would allow you to install the software you require.

You can load apps directly under android without going through the play store. This is a marked difference from ios where apple maintain an iron fist of control - you can't even install stuff you write yourself onto your own iphone / pad unless you pay Apple for the privilege (was about £50/year when I did it, and if you don't renew your subscription your own apps stop working at the end of the year).

The screen is awful, CPU is on par with 2007 tech, and internal storage is laughable. Just get a normal laptop if that's what you are really after.
As usual daugirdas is completely unable to understand that not everyone has the requirements he has. The T100 is quite a good little beast - as long as you understand its limitations. The screen is fine, although of limited resolution (daugirdas believes anything less than retina resolution is only fit for service to a blind man in Outer Mongolia). I have one and I'm quite happy with it for web browsing and the odd Excel/Word task. I wouldn't like to try and run Photoshop on it (no idea what your web design software is like though). Tend to use mine as a laptop rather than tablet though. Can't stand typing with on-screen keys! Note though that the "disk" ia 32G, half of which is taken up by the OS. You don't have a lot to play with (although you can expand via USB or the microSD card slot).

What are you trying to do with Photoshop? That will decide if a T100 is sufficient or will grind to a halt.

I wouldn't bother with Android tablets if what you want is compatibility with Windows programs TBH.

You can't load any of the applications that the OP listed though.

You need a windows tablet. I'm still using a Surface Pro 1 which does exactly the job you described, although I would love the battery life and weight savings of the latest version, it's plenty for my uses. The little Bay Trail tablets can be great, although it really depends what you are wanting to do on it.

I did think the HD was a bit on the small side too. Noticed they do a 500GB drive but I get the feeling that's a cloud based HD.
No, the HDD is in the keyboard unit.

Daugirdas is right in one respect though. I can get a better specced refurb laptop for less money: http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/comput...7_30329_xx_xx/1_20/price-asc/xx-criteria.html

Which one of those would be a good choice please?
I'd probably go with this: http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/comput...570-refurbished-15-6-laptop-21843182-pdt.html

It will be a compromise in different areas - less battery life, not as portable etc....

TBH, I'd probably push the boat out for this: http://outlet.euro.dell.com/Online/....aspx?c=uk&l=en&s=dfh&cs=ukdfh1&puid=1e7d19ec (Dell Outlet - you'll need to be quick on the Outlet store, they may all have gone by the time you read this). Better than all the ones in PC World refurbs....
