Putting a Nikon G lens on a Nikon f301

I am looking for a definitive answer to this question.

Ken Rockwell says that on the Nikon F501 - out one year later (1986 vs 1985) that G lenses will work : MF and only in Program order at their largest aperture only....

I cant however find an answer for the Nikon F301.....

The exact lens is the 28-80mm f3.3-5.6

The F301 is a manual focus camera and cannot communicate with lenses that have CPU,s, you can use AF and AFD lenses, but for manual focus only, the camera would accept a G lens, but I am afraid that without the aperture ring the camera would only shoot with the lens wide open.

Hi all,

Thanks for the answers. Using "lightmeter" an iphone app which acts as a cheapo lightmeter.

I have concluded that the F301 has defaulted the lens to widest open aperture of f3.3. All the shutter speeds it suggests for the ISO 800 film are in correlation with the shutter speeds suggested by the lightmeter app. Using these settings (ISO 800, f3.3, 1/8th for ex,.) produces a correctly exposed picture on my D300.

If it was at f22. surely it would just blink the underexposed icon or always suggest 2 second exposures.

You can mount them, however every shot will be made at the smallest aperture and your metering will be way off (probably about SIX stops underexposed) since the camera has no way to know what the aperture will be.

does my above lil experiment not right? or is the camera playing with me.

defining point will be when i get the film back. will make 3/4 shots with the G lens on and see whether it defaulted to widest aperture or smallest.
 
ive just had a look at the 28 - 80 g lens and not mounted on a camera the aperture is at its smallest ,i put it on an fm and opened the back ,and when its fired the aperture didnt open up ,,,,i cant see it being any different on a 301. ( try it )

very smart. you are right! :thumbs:

Could I solve the problem by keeping the aperture blades open, by placing a little bit of something in the little groove mechanism to keep the prong at the open end? not elegant but it should work.
 
i'd say stick the g lens on the f65 and get some manual lenses for the f301 ( cop out i know )
mel ,do you fancy meeting up the 26th march with some film and getting some demo pics?
 
ok. ( would be nice to have a film only meet as there are a few more prop... er film users on here now ) in fact if it was in north kent up to three people could have a go at developing and printing ( b& w ) in my darkroom ...
 
ha.. proper film user - i have all of 2 weeks experience in film but ive caught the bug nonetheless. 2 bodies and 3 extra lenses and now 8 rolls of film for something i planned on "having a dabble in"

in a month or two when i dont feel like a complete noob - i would love the opportunity to come down! even just to watch the development process!

how long does it take to dev B&W film? is it something that any tom dick or harry could do? there is a guide in this section of the forum but it assumes that you know a certain amount and if your new - the point is, is that you dont! i.e developer? what is that? what brand do you buy? what do i ACTUALLY do step by step with the film catridge once i remove it from my camera etc!

if you are ever bored - make a guide! and become a forum legend lol

The reason that nobody has bothered with a step by step guide is that Ilford have written and published pretty much a definitive one here. Okay, it's biased towards Ilford chemicals, but that's no hardship - the ones recommended will work very nicely, and are available in small enough quantities that you can process your first 10-20 films - just enough for the process to become second nature, and for you to be ready to experiment a little with different stuff.

if you come down to my darkroom you have to have a go ,,,no sitting back and watching ( it really is quite easy )

what i was going to say was proper photographer ,,,,,in jest ,,,,then changed it to er ..film user ,,,,,kinda fell flat when typed,,,:D
