After much umming and ahhing I have decided to get a secondhand D80 body and a sigma 10-20 lens. I think they should serve me well for my main interests in landscapes, but would also like a more general lens for every day and holiday use. Would like to hear advice on either the 18-105 or 18-135 nikkor lenses. I hope they'd be better optically than the 18-200, which is important to me.

Other than those Nikon lenses, is there anything by any of the other manufacturers which is a better bet as a not too far reaching general lens, with good image quality?

i'm selling my sony a300 kit (look in the for sale section)
i have a tamron wide angel which i would consider selling aswell as a complete system if interested

Hi Tim, welcome aboard mate.

Good choice with the D80 but can I make a suggestion? A 10-20mm lens is great for architecture but imho not so good for landscapes as I find that unless you have good fg interest you just end up with lots of tiny things in the distance. I prefer to use either my Sigma 24-60mm or a Nikon 18-70mm and stitch a couple of shots together afterwards.
I'd just get one of the 2 you mentioned above which should be wide enough at 18mm for landscapes and spend the rest on a Nikon 50mm f1.8 (which I also use for landscapes sometimes) and start saving up for all the other hundreds of things you'll find you need and can't do without.

Cheers

Hi,

I'm doing the same as you at the moment, been reading books for an age and finally decided to get some decent kit.

I've decided on the D90, and the 18-200 VRII, which i'm lead to believe is a pretty awesome lens for the money. Still a good wedge more expensive than the 18-105 or 18-135 nikkor lenses.

I'd get the 18-135 over the 18-105. It's gets much better reviews, and has VR (the 105 doesn't).

Cheers,

Matt

The 18-105 does have VR - I have the D90 which came with the 18-105 and has VR

Thanks for the help guys. I'm really not bothered about VR, but am far more interested in the optical quality of the two lenses. Do you know anywhere I might find reviews of the lenses? DP review doesn't seem to have a review of them, or What Camera.
