Put an end to GAS - chop your finger off (now with proof!)

I have GAS pretty bad - so bad that I spend more time obsessing about which camera, system or lens to purchase, than actually taking photos!

Last Saturday I chopped the top third off my finger in the lawn mower (yes I know), this means that for now I am unable to use any of my camera gear and have been struggling to do even day to day functions - should be fine once the stitches have healed etc.

So my camera gear is in the cupboard and I am itching to get out and take some pictures with it.

I guess the point of this post is not to get sympathy, it is only a finger and probably the least important one and it was my own stupid fault, but more to deliver the message that you should make the use of whatever camera equipment you have NOW.

Get out and enjoy your hobby, take some pictures, create some memories, be satisfied with the gear you have.....

....because tomorrow you may not be able to :nono:

A bit of an extreme solution in my view

Hope you recover quickly and get back to using your camera soon

Last Saturday I chopped the top third off my finger in the lawn mower

I'm trying to visualise that ... I don't do much mowing but I'm normally at the other end to the blades!

Hope you're soon healed though  ... was it okay to use thumbs? :D

Next time you are thinking about poking the lawn mower blades, use a stick!

Sounds very painful, hope your are OK. Too radical a solution to GAS me thinks.

Best wishes for a quick and speedy recovery though.

Ouch... I really feel for you Alan. I tried to dismember 3 of my left hand fingers a long time ago, by accident, with a spindle moulder but thankfully they were all saved and I can still hold my camera ok. It really is a bit of a drastic way to cut down on GAS though.

Ouch is right!! But ... you're still able to type - clicking a shutter is easier, use your index finger ;)

You're actually missing the top third now? Or it can be mended?

Oh Alan...I feel your pain.
I took a chunk out of my left forefinger a couple of months ago but on food processor blades. It couldn't be stitched as I had taken out too much so it would have had to be darned! :D
I concur that it is impossible to do much even when only one finger is affected.
Get well soon, then get out and enjoy all that m4/3 gear.
And keep away from the lawn mower for a while!

Ouch, hope it get better soon, lost the use of my little finger on my right hand, not to bad when griping a camera, except when it get really cold, then it just aches :)

But out with at least one camera everyday.

Thanks everyone - it has definitely made me think differently about GAS and photography anyway.

Photos or it didn't happen

I'm afraid it did

The end result is very similar to what my son did, when aged about six, when closing a heavy wooden door.

I'll pass on your warning to my man next time he comes to mow the lawn.

Oh goodness Alan! That is far worse than I realised. You poor chap! Please be very careful in future!

Ouch looks painful! Hope it gets better soon. But is extreme way to stop GAS!

I'm fine and looking forward to getting out and about with camera again soon.

Seriously though, take a long hard think about being grateful and satisfied with whatever gear you have, that you are physically able to use it and go out and take some pictures...

.... I insist!

Anyone know how much gardeners charge? :)

I'm actually shocked you think that about about your finger. Your hands are the most important tool you have.

Agreed, but out of all the digits, the thumb and forefinger are the most important. The end of the ring finger IMHO is the least important - so it could have been far worse.

that a good cut ,(i cant help but think of the knights that say nee !!)
how did you manage to do that?

Bloodyhell! I imagine, literally! I'd be seriously gutted if that happened me. I got stitched on the back of my hand a while back, and was worried about a bit of scarring. An actual chunk of body missing!?

You're remarkably calm and accepting, fair play.

But it still won't cure G.A.S :D Once you're finger is feeling better you'll be right back into it.

Yeez, you're moaning about a little bit of a finger being cut off and not being able to take photo's yet some people have had limbs amputated and still complete in the Olympics

Seriously tho', that does look painful :gag: But on the plus side it should heal and its not your trigger finger so you'll soon be back in the saddle.

Good luck

Some people are deaf, dumb & blind too ... doesn't mean we can't worry about ourselves ;)

By who? You don't have to preach to me about PC, I have a daughter with cerebral palsy, the correct term for her type is spastic dyplegia. You can only imagine the wrong terms some people use for it.

Makes my carpal tunnel operation seem a bit boring really. Had one done two months ago and the other done last week and itching to get out with the camera.
Trouble is I'm the oposite - now I can't use the camera for a while, I'm buying stuff I don't really need:D

'kin ell! :puke:

Hope you are able to get the camera out again soon

Look on the bright side... That's one less finger nail you'll have to trim! ;)

The more I think on it, the less important the ring finger seems. I think I only ever use it for full stops and bracket when typing
:D

Does any one else get a funny/wrong feeling in their belly button when you see pics like Andy's chopped finger?
I also get an unpleasant sensation around my bits/groin area when I see some acciedents on 'You've Been Framed' . :gag:

Yes. Felt rather :puke: !

I don't feel sick, but have this odd feeling around my belly button area and have to rub it, can't explain it really, other than that. :(

Looks a sore one Alan

I know it was the lawnmower but how on earth did you manage that ?

Ring finger on the right hand - no more clicking your fingers or getting that awkward booger from the left nostril.

Never a truer word spoken though regarding getting out there and making the most of it.

Hope it all heals well for you.

OMG !!! that's the whole nail part gone! It doesn't look too bad from the palm and compare to my hand the ring finger looks about the same length until you see it from the back of the hand!

What was your finger doing anywhere near the blade with the power plugged in ?!

ouch ouch ouch!

I'm convinced it has cured my GAS

There is about 1 inch that is missing from the top.

I didn't wait for the blade to stop spinning before putting my hand under the front of the mower after releasing the engine cut-off.

I am a fool, but it could have been much worse.

Not as if I am a nail varnish model on QVC is it :D

There were a whole load of less fortunate people than me in the hospital waiting room :(

Good on you for keeping perspective of the situation - I think everyone makes at least one stupid mistake in their life! And you're right, is only an inch of finger, could have been far worse!

It looks painful though, I hope it doesn't feel as bad and that it heals quickly for you!

You'll be wanting a new lawn mower instead of a new camera though, you'll never look at your old one the same again :D
