Good morning, having applied for a purchasing assistant job and having had 1 interview already, i have been invited back for a 2nd interview and a test on excel which i know the basics on but could do with a brush up on my skills in this area.

Has anyone got any experience in purchasing and any advice on what kind iof questions i can expect to be asked in the interview?

Also does anyone know of any good online tutorials for excel?

I really want to get this job, so your help and advice is much appreciated! :)

this any good?

Not sure of the questions, I'd imagine it's going to be things like working out which deal is better than another, procurement processes, interest calculations, calculating VAT?

excel 2007 and 2003 are quite different, certainly to navigate and a lot of new features on 07. whichever version you are asked to demonstrate i'de plead ingorance and say you've done all your work on the other !!

Not sure, but I'd assume as Dod suggests learning/remembering the Sum and AVG functions would be a good start.

Good answer, as in any interview, blag it and tell them what they want to hear :D

Don't forget payment terms, cheap price but thirty day terms, or higher price but 60 day terms...cashflow considerations...

What industry?

Any import from US that would fall under ITAR?

Any imports from outside the EU where you need to get DofCs (linked with CE Marking)

Both are probably outside of the realm of a Purchasing Assistant however worth knowing about.

Other things that you might want to read up on

Lead Times,
Minimum Order Quantities
Difference between Direct Purchasing (items that are used in making the companies products) and Indirect Purchasing (items that support day to day business e.g. tables, chairs, computers, stationary).
Issues with Sole Source Suppliers (e.g. unable to move to another supplier without significant costs)

MRP (Materials Requirements Planning) adn ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems and the importance of keeping the expected date populated
Bills Of Material (BOM for short pronounced exactly the same as bomb)
