Hey everyone.Need some good advice from all you people who are more intelligent than me.......which is probably all of you.:D.I need to know how you create all these pin sharp photos without a tripod? It seems to me that as soon as i pick up my camera in my hands sharpness goes out the window.I like experimenting with different angles that you just cant achieve with a tripod but it seems short of strapping the camera to my face there is no way to create tack sharp images at weird angles.Changing shutter speed etc still does not seem to achieve the sharpness that i see in your guys amazing pics.........so come on.Whats your secret? :help:

A suitably fast shutter speed is essential. To achieve this you may have to crank up the ISO and introduce more "noise".

Next is focus. If you are not focusing in the correct place or the depth of field is not sufficient for the subject then you will have more "softness"

Finally if using a digital camera you may need to apply some sharpening but go easy there!

There is a very important rule of thumbs that your shutter speed must be at least as fast as your focal length to avoid any camera shake. So if you are shooting at 150mm your shutter speed must be at least 1/150th second. As HUN says, you may well need to increase your ISO to achieve this

hey
the lens is the standered 18-55mm zoom lens that came with my canon rebel xt.I know its probably not the best lens but i have seen examples with this lens that look fantastic

That lens can produce some really good results as you say.

I'd suggest starting with the simple things first. Don't use the lens wide open if you can avoid it, keep it stopped down to f8 or f11 where you can.

Slow down, make sure the focus is exactly where you want it to be AND that you don't move the camera too much after you've focused. A small nudge if you've focused and then recomposed is sometimes needed but don't forget not to change the camera to subject distance.

lastly and this is one that we all miss sometimes. Fire the shutter gently and deliberately. Don't start the action of lowering the camera until the echo of the shutter has died. You may need to add your own echo in some shooting situations. ;)
