I entered a few images in the recent Astro Imager of the year competition... I got 4 of 5 shortlisted, and one of those was published on the Telegraph website

I didn't win, which is a shame but not entirely unexpected ;), but hey... I'm well chuffed to have been shortlisted and had an image used for the publicity.

All four are in the electronic exhibition at the Observatory in Grenwitch

Congratz Jon, well deserved some good shots there.

Well done-great shots. Rob

Well done John! Some fantastic images there and some well deserved recognition for your work

:clap::clap::clap:

Well done John

Getting myself a Celestron Nexstar 4SE so I can have a go at this Astrophotography lark

Thanks everyone.

Paul, sounds good. I don't know that scope, but I think it's a Mak, so will have quite a high focal ratio.

that picture of the galaxies is immense! i'd love to do that!

do you have to hook the camera to a telescope and wait for a really clear night?

well done!

Thank you

Freefall, basically.. although I tend to wait for the clear night before fixing the camera :D...

excellent. I still can't believe that you can get pics of other galaxies from down on the ground. Will have to invest in one in the future as I love space. still can't get over how good that pic is, it's my fave just because you have got 2...yes 2 galaxies in one photograph with no need to loan the hubble space telescope

:D I've got a couple with 3 galaxies in... Those 2 are about 12.5 million light years away. The Leo triplet and M51 are about 30 million light years away, and I did get one of a galaxy with a star had gone supernova from 55 million light years away. All from my back garden...

Gavin, thanks. Yes, that's my imaging scope and has been since last november.

Gavin you'll need a tracking mount (think tripod with motors on the top) to do anything other than the moon. The Galaxies image is a combination of 2 and 3 minute exposures (168 in total). You can't get longer than 30 seconds at 18mm without trailing showing.

Thanks very much Ant, I'm extremely chuffed

Thats alot of shots stacked up there!
Still, While its down from £475 to £215, I might as well get it, and pickup a mount at later date. do you have a larger version of the last shot above?

:D... I've nothing uploaded, only the 800 wide version. I'll see if I can get something sorted out later.

Thanks
