A mate of mine has a new bar/club opening next week and he has asked that I take some shots when the refurb is finished so they can use them for their website and facebook pages etc.

Now it is going to be a nice little trendy bar with the emphasis on mood lighting, so its fair to say it will be pretty dark in there with glowing blue and red lights etc.

I will though have the full run of the place so what I really need to know is do I go for the long exposures on a tripod to get the image looking right, do I use lighting such as my flashguns or even my Lencarta studio kit?

Not really ventured down this route before so would be nice to know if anyone has done anything like this before and how they tackled it?
 
Before you do any photography, draw up a simple contract, and work out a price, otherwise you'll probably come unstuck after.
I'd do tripod shots before it opens to capture the mood, and flash shots of the official opening bit, plus any celebs (another reason for the contract, the paper/magizines may buy these)
Don't get rat-arsed before if theres free drinks, and you may need an assistant to watch the gear when it fills up. Wayne
 
sorry mate I may not have made my original post clear...its a pre-opening shoot of just the bar i.e no people. This is just for advertising the bar itself and website etc. We havent discussed the opening night yet and to be honest I might prefer to be with a glass of a different kind in my hand when it opens!

I dont need a contract as he is a good friend of mine and I am not charging. I will do the pics, hand them over then get plenty of free nights on the ale in a nice bar and a few favours up my sleeve for future use. Some jobs are worth more than money in the long run....

Take a variety of different shots and let your friend decide.
The two types of shot I take are 1. available light only and 2. available light with some fill in flash (usually to light something close at hand, eg table and chairs). For both you need a tripod.
More often than not, it is option 2 that gives the best result.

Anyone else got anything to add?

Looking forward to this now....

I have had a few ideas of setting up a few shots with one of the bar lads throwing a bottle or two about and having a fairly slow shutter speed to catch some movement trails and maybe a bottle of bubbly on ice on the bar with some lighting behind it.

Any other suggestions?
 
with the run of the place will be able todo lots of set up shots with glassware, champage bottles etc.

would maybe go onto a restaurant / bar review site to either get some inspiration or even to see if there seems to be a standard type of shot that always appears on advertising and websites, you can then embrace or try something different from the norm depending on what you see.
 
OK so its the opening night tonight and I am going down there at 8pm before it officially opens at 10pm so that I can get the pictures of the place with nobody in.

I am taking the flashguns and studio lights just in case because I am really not sure what I will be facing until I get there (refurb will only be finished today so not had a look yet).

Only really shot people and portraits in the past so looking forward to this to see if I can get something out of it, just totally unsure of lighting until I get there so fingers crossed!
 
As schrismonkey said, have a good look around on the internet to get a taste of the photo's other bars and clubs use and they should hopefully give you a good idea of what you want to achieve.
