Until the boys in blue come along and lock you up for a couple of days. I know people who do this for a living - and they make sure the local bobbies know what they're up to beforehand.

Oh, and beware of honeypots - open servers that are there to tempt people just like you. Then leech everything from your machine.

Erm, if you're going to connect a computer to an unknown network you make sure it isn't exposing any services that can be exploited.
