Rant on its way sorry folks, Bloody people and camera phones do my nut in they are so fing rude and selfish, I'm there in my place nice and early waiting for torch to run directly towards me only for 30 seconds before it's coming one nob with a camera phone pop up and stand in front of me WTF! I'm a big guy I've got a d3 and 70-200 are you mad woman polite word in her ear and she shifts, then for another nob to my right step in front of me with a huge flag held between him and his wife, I didn't even open my mouth before someone else told him to do one, turn up late a push to front! People just are so selfish no way I'd push in when someone's there with there camera already just find a new place! Argh!!! Ok done now and breathe :-)

same thing happened to me.. but i did get a couple of shots.
 
Yeah got a few thankfully but it was harder that when I used to be a pap! Lol
 
Sounds like concerts that I go to ... you cannot leave an inch of space in front of you or someone will fill it (usually the tallest person at the venue in my case)
 
I had a similar thing at a Blow Down I attended a couple of weeks ago, I was the first person there as I knew what I wanted to achieve so got there for 8am with a 11am blowdown planned spoke with security to establish where it would be okay to stand and secured a great spot, about an hour before blowdown some woman pitched up with a 7D+15-85 and stood right where I had planned claiming to be freelance press :suspect: yet camera was in full auto :lol: :lol: :lol: anyway to there credit the security staff all told here to leave, I also now have the contact detail so that in the future I can get even better access :D
 
I guess you were with other people there watching? you should have gone in to the road and shot like press just don't get too close as the police running along side ask you to move.

She stood where you planned on standing? So she beat you to it you mean?

And are you putting down the fact she had a 7D and 18-55 in auto mode because you now own a 5d?:thumbsdown:

Everyones wanting photos of the same thing at these events, its going to be a cattle mart.

Or people could just not be rude and think its ok to stand on front of people who were there first maybe ;-)

If I shop in Tesco and go to the check out I don't walk in front of the person already at the till

No I mean I had spoken with security but moved from where I was going to set up and did set up because they wanted to keep it clear to allow vehicular access

No I wasn't putting down the camera it's a great camera and lens combo what I was suggesting was that she had no idea how to use it which didn't strike me as professional and knowing how to use her camera as anything more than a point and shoot, no something I would expect of anyone expecting to ear money for the use of a camera, it has sweet FA with what camera I own and in fact my stills from the day came from my 450D

Or the people who turn up late at an airport,you have turn up early to get a nice seat by the window,then they expect you to move so they can sit together :nono: :thumbsdown:
 
I can understand your sentiment but the hard truth is if your in public, there is something as popular as the Olympic flame passing through your town, then crowds will gather, photos will be taken, people get in each others way and there is nothing you can do other than suck it up and adapt. No doubt you were in someone else's way.
Did you have a tripod? Were you nailed to the floor? You should have been as mobile as the next man for something like this, climb a tree or something!

Stating that you had a d3 and your nemesis had a camera phone does make you seem like a bit of a camera snob who thinks that through buying one you have acquired a licence for first dibs on any image, anywhere. I don't know you so how can i say, its just irrelevant to mention kit in this situation.
Why didn't you just politely ask the so called "nob" to move?

Hmm ok... i may have been in someone else's way but only as they would have arrived AFTER me so they should have got there bums out of bed earlier then.

the mention of kit was purely on emphasis on how big my camera and lens combo are and that she would have not missed that i was not just a 'waver'. Shoot with what you like bothers me not my fave camera is a 7 year old canon digi but that is not going to do anything worth while 60 meters from the subject being photographed, An iPhone pic from 60 meters is not going to 'get the shot I'm afraid and I do love the iPhone camera but come on now.

the whole point of the post was about peoples attitude, the lack of people's common courtesy now days as people just don't care about anyone else anymore as long as they are good it seems like everyone else can go fick themselves. I would not dream of getting somewhere late then standing in someone's way just out of manners, but hey seems to just be me mostly.
 
Ps did ask the first nob to move as stated but the second with the flag I didn't have to bother with as all the other people there started on them first :-)
 
you realise there is probably someone on another forum moaning about a nob with a D3 who thought he owned the place...
 
What is worse is the people who have an i-Pad with the book type cover holding it in front of them to use as a camera. An A4 (or A3 if the let it flap open !) obstruction right in front of you !! Grrr
 
i found this when the sea odyssey was in Liverpool. I got myself to the waterfront in plenty of time to see the giant puppets come past on their boat when about 5 minutes before they were due a woman is stood directly behind me and is pushing her 2 children through in front of me. Once they were actually through she asked me if i minded :lol: i'm not one to get too annoyed at such things but it was still pretty cheeky :lol: as the children were only small i said yeah fine and managed to shoot over their heads. They also managed to cause a small parting of the people to the sides so i got an even better view than i would have :D
 
I only found out last week, when the 'torch' came near to where I live, they did a 'press' shoot in the town the day before the 'official' so the press could get good pics. Now that's a good idea. Get ahead of the games!!!

Ok this is my last post as it seems to be getting into trolling now,

There was no space otherwise i wouldn't have give a hoot to start with,

Where do you draw the line? Would YOU step in front of someone who was there first?

do you just play the game of, she steps in front, you step back in front of her, she steps in front you again, you then again step in front of her, before you know it your under the Olympic bus!!!

Let's make this clear as I think some are missing the point, she had EVERY right to take her pictures on any camera she likes I really don't give a toss, stop getting all funny about the d3 comment people, as explained it was to indicate size of camera so she didn't just assume I was just a waver which would then not mattered if she stood in front.

but! You don't stand in front of someone who was there first, I mean come on! Ffs manners people that's all I'm saying! Ficking hell.

Seriously I'd hate to shoot round near you guys if you think its ok to rock up late and just plonk yourself in front without thinking of anyone else.

So she physically pushed you to get into that space? Otherwise it seems like there was actually some space there..
 
You were lucky, my mate's sister lives in Devon somewhere, they went to see the poxy torch, got there early and got a good place on the prom, along came the torch convoy and parked their buses right in front of them, I don't think they actually got to see the torch.

Actually one of my best roadside shots was a downward angle using a wide angle and hoisting the camera on a monopod with a remote trigger. You aren't exactly going to get an 'exclusive' shot standing by the roadside otherwise- you'll just get exactly the same shots that everyone else has got elsewhere along the route!
 
is not the OP a member of the public also or does having a camera make them different?
 
I don't get the issue - you wanted to get a pic of a once-in-a-lifetime event and another person did.... If this was an event that happens on a regular basis then perhaps there wouldn't be such a clamour for position, but it's the olympic torch and many people will never get a chance to see it again. At occasions like this, it's pretty well-documented what happens with crowds...
 
Surely it's a matter of common courtesy not to push in.
What happened to manners?

There's manners, but there also seems like this guy left enough space to fill another person in front of him. You can't expect loads of space.
 
society is constantly changing (not always for the better) but better to learn to live within in that be a bitter old outsider dreaming about the olden days

I am certainly not a "bitter old outsider", I do, however have standards, as do plenty of others.
Why should I "learn to live within it" if I don't choose to. I abhor bad manners, people spitting, dropping their burger rubbish out of their car window when parked next to a bin, and yes, lots of other things, and I have no intention of "learning to live with it".
 
I turned up late, about 15 minutes before the torch was due to pass. I found a goodish spot with not many people deep and asked the lady in front of me if it was ok if I shot over her shoulder even though I knew it was going to be an absolute crap shot, to be honest I wasn't too fussed if I got a shot or not. The group she was with turned round and said "ooo love you get in front of us with a camera like that!", so they all moved and let me crouch in front of them. Very kind people. Even offered me some water as I was a bit flustered.

The photo still turned out to be poop :lol:

So if you are not prepared to live with current society what are you planning to do about it?
 
Similar has happened to me too. I figure that if others are there taking photos then it's a good indication that the scene/event is interesting and that I need to think of ways to prevent my photos looking like theirs - one of the easiest ways is to try to include them in the shot (a sea of iphones trying to catch a glimpse of the torch), as they are usually too busy trying to make sure no one gets in the way of theirs.

A fortnight ago I set up my camera (large format and sat on a bulky tripod, so hard to miss) for a shot, on a rare day when pollution and haze had forgotten to come to town, and waited an hour or more for the fleeting moment of twilight. Just after I had done my final metering and was about to push the shutter release a wedding photographer came into frame from stage left - complete with groom, bride in a ridiculous gigantic red dress, make up assistant and a human light stand carrying what could easily have been a beach umbrella. Time being of the essence, I mustered up my worst Cantonese and polite asked them to shift for a minute. All obliged except for the groom who remained stubborn. So I took the photo anyway and to his credit he didn't move for the entire 90 seconds. The resulting photo, a standard urban photo of light trails and buildings, has now been spiced up a bit by the inclusion of a mysterious tuxedo man. I'm now trying to figure out how to get more annoying members of the public (preferably well dressed and static) in all of my evening photos :D

Firstly, stop making ridiculous assumptions, i.e that I am "not prepared to live with current society". I do, of course, live in this current society , but have standards which I maintain. These include common decency and manners.
If we all chose your approach and accepted the decline in such standards then I think society as a whole would be a much poorer place.
As this is not the correct part of the forum for discussions on public morality I will refrain from posting any more on this, and not derail the OP any further.

I have standards I maintain too but have a different perspective than yourself, that is all. Whether you or I maintain our standards won't make any difference to anyone else's which is why I was interested in what you are doing about it specifically. If you are not doing anything then you are accepting them.
This is a fundamental part of the OP so I don't feel it is derailing it. A crowd of people all vying for position in a once in a lifetime event hardly means we are on the highway to a mis-functioning society does it?

Just adding a bit of perspective...
