PSE7 cannot open D300s .NEF files

Anyone help please.

I have PSE7
Nikon D700
Just got a Nikon D300s

PSE7 opens the .NEF files from my D700, but when I try to open a .NEF file from the D300 I get a message saying it is the wrong type of file.

Very annoying.
Be obliged for a solution.

You need to update the software. It hasn't got the protocols to open D300s files. Now the problem is going to be, that I don't think the updates include the D300s ( you'll need to check with the Adobe web site) support the D300s for PSE7.

So you may have to upgrade to PSE8 ( check it supports the D300s) or, download the latest version of Adobe's DNG converter. Convert the files to DNG and then open in PSE7

The DNG converter is free, but does introduce another step in the processing

I tried upgrading ACR to 5.6 - made no difference.
Website seemed a bit vague as to PSE 7 being usable with 5.6.

Do you know id the DNG converter can batch process?

Yes the DNG converter is a batch processor.

Just point it at the folder that contains the .nef files. Tell it where you want the converted files located. Decide if you want the original files deleted. ( say no to this, delete them yourself when you are sure the conversion has gone OK). The only other thing you need to do is select the version of ACR you want the dng file to be compatible with. Try 4.7 ( from memory) if you get a file error go to an earlier version.

I've just brought Elements 8 to use with my D300S and can confirm that it does open the RAW format and works very well.

As long as you have installed the ACR 5.6 update correctly, you should be able to read and edit D300S RAW files with Elements 7.

Unfortunately I have already been down that road without success.
It requires ACR 5.6 to be manually installed in :-
Photoshop Elements 7.0: Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 7.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats

Been through all my PSE folders and cannot find that one.

Looks very much like that will be my way forward

I'll ask around to see what programs others are using to work with .NEF files.

(If only there was an industry standard for RAW the endless queries like mine would go away - hopefully).
