Hi Gareth,
I can't answer your question, but do have an alternative suggestion: try
Photofiltre (free) or even its more powerful stablemate
Photofiltre Studio!
I have used both with children aged 10+ and they coped admirably, the more curious and creative amongst them quickly learning to exploit layers and the various filters to great effect. The one 'weakness' of the free version (
Photofiltre) used to be the absence of the layers feature, but I note that this has been rectified in the latest version (7).
The developer, Antonio Da Cruz, has very generously made the more powerful
Studio version very affordable for educational users, a license for 50 (
yes fifty!) users costing a mere 35 Euro.
Both versions are well supported, have a dedicated forum and a large user-base, amongst whom several have developed a diverse selection of plug-ins which are freely available on the forum.
Further information can be found here:

Are you a happier husband, father and photographer, but not necessarily in that order, now that you no longer inhabit the 'dark halls' of the PU forum?
Best wishes,
Jon
