Is there a reset to go back to the imported file after mucked about with it, so I can start again.

I'm not 100% on elements but in Photoshop you hold down the Alt or Opt key and the dialogue box at the bottom changes to RESET.
There should be a DEFAULT in blue at the top of the Basic Slider panel as well. Under the White Balance sliders.

In PSE10 Camera Raw you can by selecting that little sub-menu. Sorry don't know if the same in 9.

Looking at the above, at the bottom of the flyout menu it says Reset camera raw defaults which is what you need to go back to original.

Thank you for that.

Is there a way of having two raw picures on screen showing the before and after images as one can with JPEG's.

I'd be careful with resetting camera raw defaults as it might wipe your normal RAW default settings - I usually press "cancel" bottom right of the screen shot to cancel any changes to the RAW & leave it as it was when first opened.

I might be getting the wrong end of the stick here, but (assuming that you didn't save changes to the NEF), what's to stop you just deleting the relevant .xmp file and starting again ?
