PSD v Tiff

I have noticed that some of you peeps use psd files and others tiffs. What is the difference? and why do you choose one over the other?

I download RAW, save to DVD's and HDD. Convert into photoshop and then save 1 copy as a tiff and crop the other to customer's size and save that as a Tiff to send to the print/lab.

Can someone explain the difference.

PSD is Photoshop native, TIFF is universal :)
 
TIFF tend to be larger. For same image and quality settings.

Not sure if all PSD Photoshop settings are stored in the TIFF either?

TIFF and PSD are both owned by Adobe, As said above about sizes etc, PSD is the best if your saving layered images, as the techincal standard of PSD has been brought forward with time but TIFF has not.

At the end of the day if your not using complex saved layers use either if your need complex saved layers use PSD.
 
Anybody know why my TIFF files are weaker than my PSD files when I straight convert them? They are noticeably less sharp.
 
db247 - it's likely to be a pebkac

If you do any edits in PS using, say, layers, then save it in PSD.
If you just want to store the final image, for example exported from a raw converter, go for tiff (i prefer LZW compression, since the GIMP supports it).

You might want to try PNG as well, as you can losslessly compress it, just like tiffs (LZW is a lossless type of compression).

Hi, i'm going to have to google pebkac ;)

I edit in CS3, save to PSD. To store the final image are you suggesting to save as TIFF with LZW as opposed to with zero compression and that might result in identical images to the psd version?

What I was trying to say is that there must be something you have missed, aside from possible colour management issues.

Are yo sure you're viewing them at 100% when comparing?
 
an image saved in Tiff and in PSD will be the same, their should be no difference to the reopened file.

That's what I thought. I guess it's either a bridge thing, an anomaly, or maybe because I didn't view them at 100% and I was comparing them at 25 or so. Hmmm
 
I have never noticed any problems and regularly use bridge cs3 and save psd / tiff.
