Yes
I have a ps3 but i always hear that the online experience on xbox is better and thats why you have to pay for it. What exactly does that mean though?

I always get a perfect connection when playing online so what more could be improved in online gameplay that would be worth paying for?

Maybe because those that say that have xboxes! I've never had a problem with PS3, Playstation Network hacking aside.

it seems to be a general consensus though, i just cant see what else you can improve on that's worth paying for

That was one of the reasons I went for a PS3, as a matter of principle I wouldn't pay extra to play online, paying for the games is enough!

I don't play either of them but my brother has both and rarely uses the PS3. He just says the online experience is just better - Is it worth £35 a year? Only you can decide.

thats exactly what I hear but nobody ever clarifies what is better about it?

The actual gameplay on the same games is the same, so the only thing that the online does is how well you connect, if the connection drops all the time, is the server down etc.

I can't see what sony could do to my online experience to improve it, so what magic things are the xbox users getting that make them say that?

I have owned both over the years, I've settled on the PlayStation, I think it's slicker, looks better and have never had a problem with online play so I'm definitely PS3 man modern warfare three all the way if you fancy a game and then thenissanman :)

I want to play online, that is all...not have all these silly avatars and what not. I've had both systems, but now only have my ps3.

Why should you have to pay an annual subscription to play a game online? Scandalous.

From having both and knowing people who have considered moving or have moved from one to the other (yes both ways). The ones who stick with 360 did it for 2 reasons only - A) they just know other people with 360's B) the investment they have made already in the console.

I left xbox for PS3 much prefer the console. Only down side is most my friends and family all stuck with 360's & the money I had invested in the 360 (rockband kits, hawks skateboard etc).

yeah, im starting to think that xbox users who come out with the "better online experience" stance are just saying that t try and make themselves feel better for the fact they have to pay for it.

Exactly, well said

Many have both and choose the one they prefer - It could also be that their friends only have one machine and in order to play wih their buddies in games they choose to set games up with them by using that one.

I don't think that it's about making themselves feel better. I'm sure they would prefer it to be free right enough ;)

none of that has anything to do with the comment that people say which is

"The online experience is better"

which was my original question. What is better about it?

I have an Xbox and have always been an Xbox guy since the original Xbox. For xmas I'm getting PS3 off the other half, simply because pretty much all my friends have PS3 and I'm bored of being a loner on the Xbox!

I've played them both and they are just as good as each other imo.

so is there any difference at all to the online play?

Nope, all the same, only difference imo is the actual "look" of the user interface, as soon as your in the game, it's identical lol

well there you go, good to get it from the horses mouth so to speak.

Bought a 360 when they came out, probably would have a PS3 but they weren't around then and I don't know anyone with a PS3, so that makes my reason for the 360 pretty reasonable.

I do think that the subscription fee is a bit of a con, especially considering PS3 offers the same thing for nout, and the games are a similar price. Now on the PC (ignoring the likes of WoW) the games are even cheaper and it still costs nout to play online (I know you can rent/host servers of your own too with cost implications).

Perhaps someone can provide some stats, but I seem to believe the 360 is the highest selling out of the two, so I can't see why the Xbox Live service can't be provided for free like the PS3 service, especially considering prices of games etc aren't wildly different and those sales must be the source of funding for the PSN.

but I seem to believe the 360 is the highest selling out of the two,

2008 http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/ps3-outsells-xbox-360-in-q2-worldwide

2010 http://www.t3.com/news/sony-playstation-3-outsells-xbox-360-by-28-per-cent

PS3 and Xbox have always swopped over best selling console. After PS3 being top last year its already expected 360 will this year.

Live subscription is a cash cow for M$ and until all you 360 users stop paying it they'll keep charging. It's always been free on PSN and of course there is PSPlus (subscription system) but you do get freebies and cheaper games etc.

I have both and prefer gaming on the 360. I came from the original PS and PS2 and really didn't think Playstation could be bettered in that respect.

I thought the 360 controller was just wrong in the beginning, now I can't use the PS3 one.

The PS3 is still the best home console/entertainment hub - maybe the latest 360 update is bringing it closer. The simpler hard drive upgrade, music and video transfer, Iplayer(s), Vidzone, PlayTV and ability to backup recordings, Bluray and better engineering IMO.

I guess the reason I pay to play is probably the investment. Why the investment -well better 'exclusive' games available back in the day, my mates were already on it.

I just renewed my Gold account for £35 for 12mths +2bonus months so for £2.50 per month it is not all that bad. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Xbox-LIVE-G...QRGK/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1323600498&sr=8-4

As far as the "online experience" what is the difference though andy! Like what do you get above the ps3 online experience?

Its the same. As previously mentioned in this thread. The game play is the same.

Basically the same games (bar exclusives on either side) Same game modes. Same amount of players. Same kids swearing and playing music ALL the time.
only difference is when buttons need to be pressed to do something with on screen instructions, it shows the buttons for the console you are using.

Had both, now with PS3 only as the fact i couldn't justify the gold membership when some months i'd only game for an hour in total.

I dont think you really get anything extra on XBL, perhaps slightly more rigorous policing on hackers and people who go online just to annoy other and more regular updates but thats about it. Cloud gaming profile perhaps as you can link your XBL account to your GFWL account? More than anything its the security, PSN has been hacked and had private personal data of account users stolen how many times now? 2? 3?

You stand to loose alot more than £35 if your details are stolen.

And for the cost can you really complain? At £2.50ish a month like Andy said, and you play online for a few hours a couple of times a week. Thats say 24 hours a month? At around 10p an hour its not bad for a service which really isnt essential to gaming. More of an added luxury.

Once, other Sony sites hit and people think that means PSN. :bang: Also the wording was "could have been accessed" username and passwords were taken not cc details. horses mouth and if they did the security code isn't stored as you have to type it in when doing a purchase.

Microsoft are not free from hackers stealing data/CC date. Zunes been done. CC data is stolen daily from companies world wide, you'd be amazed at who if you look into it.

From having both I can say PSN has had about 6+ updates this year. M$ xbox updates are usually just dashboard updates (woop)

There is cloud system on PS3 for game saves etc - part of + subscription service. FB updates built in to PS3 for trophies etc. I have mine set up to Twitter via other sites such as PS3heroes.

I guess I can't really define it and If I am being honest I am no more than a casual gamer. I don't have enough PSN time to give a balanced view regarding the online experience due to the fact that my mates were on the 360.

You could say its akin to Nikon vs Canon. My mates were all on Live, the controller was ergonomically suited to me from that I bought more games and went with that system.

There is also the memories, had some proper laughs at mates styles of playing (badly -me included) so there is some kinda bizarre fondness for playing that machine - so this indefinable reason rather than 'pure tech' is the likely reason it reigns supreme for me:thumbs:

I still would tell anyone the PS3 is the better buy overall unless you wanted a dedicated games machine and your buds were all on Live but that goes without saying ;)

In my opinion Xbox live is better than psn. I have both an Xbox 360 and a ps3 and the ps3 never gets touched apart from to watch films. As a media unit I much prefer the ps3 but as a games console the 360 is better.

Reason being, Xbox live is better than psn. It works better, you have party chats with friends who don't have to be in your games, and its just generally a nicer experience.

party chats is the only thing that is different as far as i can see, my boy has an xbox and i have a PS3, we both have the same network issues, but gameplay and online experience appears no different, only chat, and who wants to chat to load of screaming idiots anyway!

That's the thing. You don't have to chat to screaming idiots. You can have an entirely different chat with just friends who are playing other games

So party chat is the only difference and you pay £2.50 a month for the privalidge ?

I have owned both in the past but i also settled on the ps3, the only difference for me in the two ' online ' parts are one you pay for the other you don't.

Ps3 advantages over xbox 360:

No online sub charge.
Blu-ray player
Internet browser( great for forums )
Multi card reader
Plus all the great software like lovefilm, the iplayers and the picture database.

Ok PSN did get hacked, but xbox also have had issues with there users being sent fraudulent e-mails.

Also every person i know who has had an xbox has experienced the 'red/yellow' ring of death, playstation doesn't seem to have this fault, there has been some cases but nowhere near the rate of returned xbox's.

I stilll have the same 60g old ps3, 5/6 years old now and never no problems.

I also wrote all this from my ps3.

Yip been there :)

They did however send a new one to replace it and extended the warranty for a further year!

Go fine out what your friends have and get the same thing. Playing with your mates is much better than just playing public's.

only the first released 60gb model like you have has the card reader :( guess Sony decided to cheapen things up when they released the next revision (the 40gb like i've got)....no card reader and no emotion engine so no ps2 games :(

the lack of a web browser on the 360 is criminal too :)

Nail on the head. If you want to play online and want to play with friends get what they have.

I do miss being able to get a game with friends whenever i pop online. Still some cracking public players who are friendly and will seek you out again on PS3. (view last played with to find them as well)

Find it easier just to use it on home network and pull films/tv shows/music etc from my Mac. Has USB ports for when friends lend you any documents etc via USB stick.
