Firstly, let me just say that most of my experience with all things to do with Sony Playstation and gaming in general, is mainly in the locating and hopefully purchasing a bargain department....I've yet to fully embrace the depths of a game menu/inventory :D

Daughter has the old PS3 fat (40gig) and it's now a matter of deleting stuff before trying something new
I've done the google and youtube tour and I'm thinking that 500 gig should do the trick.....just wondering if there might be any issues with going that little bit further, perhaps upto 1tb
Really need an external hard drive too but could I also use a 64gig usb stick to backup/transfer the data (cheaper option for the moment ?)
Any tips,recommendations glady welcome

Thanks in advance

As long as the 64gb usb stick is formatted to fat32 it should be plenty big enough (seeing as it's bigger than the internal 40gb)

This is fairly ironic, as I have the old 40gb fat ps3 and I put a 160gb in it this afternoon. It really is easy. Backup to the external usb drive, whip out the 40gb drive out of the ps3, slap in the new one, let the ps3 format the drive then copy the backup back to the ps3.

A 1tb drive should be ok, the only thing I've been told is to try and use a slower spinning drive (5400rpm other than 7400rpm) as it will make the console less likely to overheat.

I've just signed up to Playstation plus as it's 29.99 at the moment for 12 months and I've already downloaded lbp2, infamous 2, bio shock 2 and motor storm apocalypse for free so it's well worth the money :)

Out of interest, what's the need for the bigger hard drive?

Are you using it to store and stream films?

I'm looking for a streaming solution at the moment :)

I upgraded mine because I am now subscribed to playstation plus, where you get to download around 60 full games over the course of the year. I downloaded Bioshock 2 at 11gb today, so you can see how a 40gb doesn't go very far (I realise the 160 I fitted isn't massive either, but I had a spare)

tend not to use the PS3 for storing movies, as it isn't NTFS compatible (sort it sony!) so any drives need to be FAT32 so 4gb files sizes max...naff for HD stuff.

Alot of people swear by PS3 Media server for streaming, but I just get a mass of DNLA protocol errors on mine for some reason (not sure if it's because it's getting on a bit), so tend not to bother. Any media server should be fine though, TVersity, Plex etc.

Just had another thought,is it possible to put the old drive in an enclosure and use that as the back up/restore to the new drive once formatted and should I download the system update to a usb stick ?.....or am I missing a trick along the way

Still not sure whether to go for a 1tb or keep it to 500gig
....and just to reply to df,it's crammed full with game data

you can download the system updates to a USB stick and install them that way, although I just tend to let the PS3 download them when needed.

Not quite sure what you are getting at with the other bit ...forgive me if i'm just repeating what you put, but this is how i'd do it....

1:Format your 64gb usb stick to FAT32. This is a PITA in Windows 7 as it doesn't give you the option. Use this tool to do it (I used it to do mine and it works a treat).
2:Plop your 64gb USB stick into your ps3 and backup your data to it....this does take quite a while.
3:Whip out the 40gb internal HDD and replace it with your brand spanking new one. Let the ps3 format it.
4:Restore user data to your new ps3 drive from the usb stick.
5:Put the 40gb drive in an enclosure, format it to FAT32 and use it as an external hdd.

Instead of using the usb stick to back up.....take out the original 40 gig drive (#5 on your list),put it in the enclosure and use that to restore the system/files etc to the newly formatted 500gig or whatever I use

....and I'm assuming the 40gig is already FAT32 ?
(I maybe assuming too much though )
Anyhow,I'm sure it'll be alright on the night :D

Thanks for keeping this thread alive btw Paul

Had an idea you might be thinking that! Might work, its worth a try!

Just means you'll have to swap the internal drives back over and do it my way if it doesn't work! If it does workbthough it will save a load of time as the backup takes ages!

Good luck and let us know how you get on :)
