Yes
Right people, I need your collective intelligence and advice. Which is the better of the 2 and why?

xbox everytime - better online communication - simply to use - the kinect has come out which destroys the wii so many games available for next to nothing

ps3 only thing is would say that would ever make me buy this ( getting one for christmas )
blu - ray and gran turismo 3 - online communication is poor

PS3! for call of duty and GT5!

but then ive always been a PS boy... so i would say that.

A few of my mates have xbox's, and in my opinion, Its pretty much the old Canon/Nikon argument lol!! once youve got used to one you tend not to change!

My brother always a PS until xbox came out. He has xbox and PS3 and the PS is never used. My step son always had lpaystations and we were going to get him one for christmas but doesn't one - xbox all the way.

my neighbours sone has both - PS3 was wasted money!

the only use the PS3 seems to get from many is as a good BluRay player :)

Both are good though, just the xbox seems better.

PS3- Online ghaming is free.
Not that I play. I lost interest in playing years ago. As much as the likes of Grand Tourismo games have great graphics, I can't get on with how the cars handle, too unrealistic in my view as you can't get a true feel for handling etc. The TOCA Touring Car games on PSOne were so much better if they could do the same now but with the better graphics available today, I may just be persuaded out of retirement.

PS3. Online if free as opposed to paying on XBox. Amazing Blu Ray player built in is really a great selling point.

Playstation Move, which a lot of people are saying is better than Kinect as the accuracy is much better. Kinect will probably take over the Wii side of things, but if you are a true gamer it apparently does not have the accuracy, as well as needing a lot of space to play it in.

GT5, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank. Exclusives and amazing games. Cheap games are out there for both consoles now so that is not an issue.

For and against with both, but because of the amazing Blu Ray player the PS3 is hard to beat for me.

have got both ps3 everytime and online gaming is free and everybit as good as the xbox, plus the ps3 just does so much more(bluray) + its 3d compaitible.
must mention had 3 xboxes due to(ring of death) had one playstation since launch day)

oh yeah and f1 2010 is the best driving game ever.

Good luck with your choice

Cheers people, am still divided-how does the console connect to the internet? Do I need broadband? I only use a dongle on my laptop? Any help gratefully taken on board.

Unless you want a BR player desperately (and if you buy, buy a proper one for not much money now) then Xbox... Xbox live just works, fast game loading times and better "own titles".

The number of whinings you see about bugs in PS3 games also might put you off - Xbox hardly ever crashes.... well, not if you are buying a modern one and not the 1st gen one from several years ago that is!

Both connect to the internet on wired or wireless ethernet.

Don't think your dongle will work... unless you have a router that takes a dongle (there are some).

Probably 3G internet will be super sucky for gaming tho

Think I'll be the devil's advocate and mention the Fuji cameras of the games computer world that is the PC and say I'll stick with my PC for gaming.
I still think my trusty E6600 duo core PC along with 4 gb of ram and a 1Gb GT9600 graphics card packs more than enough grunt to play the latest games, even at high resolutions. I also find it easy to play FPS games using a keyboard + mouse and the games themselves costs next to nothing. As for interent connectivity, say no more about that.

I once had an Xbox 360 about a year ago, but it only got used twice before I sold it. For some reason it just didn't gel with me.

PS3 for me, I use mine as a PVR by using play tv, it can play blue ray if I want, free online play which is fine, played COD 4 for over 5 days online, so can't be that bad, why oh why pay to go online????

Must admit all friends have one, so we all play together, but none of those machines have ever had a problem, mine has been used more or less every day, ask that of most x-box users!! my courier went through at least 2, then swapped his x-box with a mate for a PS3.

I had the same dilemma and in the end plumper for a PS3 as they appeared more flexible for other things such as Blu Ray etc.

The only downside is lack of wi-fi connectivity wirelessly which appears a real issue, particularly if you're on Sky Broadband. I tried everything to get connected wirelessly and failed, in the end I had to go hard wired which is a PITA. I would suggest a quick google first to check out connectivity woes.

Don't let anyone fool you there are less ********s online on PS3 either than xbox, it's just as bad!

Xbox 360, you may have to pay for live, but the bonuses you get from it is worth paying. Better online experience as well. With the new Xbox 360 there is build in wireless. The Kinect is amazing, its not just the games, controlling the menu is possible with your hand!.

The only reason why I would buy a PS3 is GT5, which looks awesome.

Ive got both, for Gaming it has to be the 360, for everything else, the PS3
PS3 benefits for me;

Bluray
HDD easily upgraded to any industry standard version (sata 2.5")
Built-in WIFI
Transfer your MP3s via disk/pendrive,
PlayTV - buy the twintuner extra £40 or so, record your DigitalTV, play pause rewind livetv, you can also export TV recordings from the library into the Video menu and transfer from there to external hard drive and onto laptop.
Vidzone music videos free on demand - quite a decent selection, build your own playlists
Lovefilm.com - new streaming subscription video service
IPlayer, ITV Player, 4OD - now ALL available for free - a joy to have on your main tv.
Webrowser (not great but there)
Upload your jpeg images easily, organise them on the PS3
Upload your own video files, including copyright free dvds (as long as under 4GB-fat32)
Remote Play from PSP

There will be others, I dont use the 360 often anymore - got bored with gaming in general. However still rate the 360 gaming experience and joypad well ahead of the PS3 and worth the Gold fee.

I would have a PS3 over a 360 in the blink of an eye (now);)

Although i own both, i much prefer the ps3, because it has free online gaming and i also think that the graphics are more superior to xbox

ps3, years ahead of the xbox,

Think I'll be the devil's advocate and mention the Fuji cameras of the games computer world that is the PC and say I'll stick with my PC for gaming.
I still think my trusty E6600 duo core PC along with 4 gb of ram and a 1Gb GT9600 graphics card packs more than enough grunt to play the latest games, even at high resolutions. I am so totally with you on this..especially with FPS. Also, as we only have one telly in the house I would never get time to play on the console!

PS3, free online but with a paid option if you so desire, Iplayer, ITV iplayer and 4OD, wireless internet and wireless controllers as standard, personally i prefer the controller. Bluray is excellent, and just generally feels better. Lost cound of the amount of people i know with broken xboxes, MS reckon they've sold 25million or more, but how many of them are 'doubles'???

ps3 has excellent games, as does 360, but my own preference would be ps3. Kinect needs 6ft to play in properly, not aimed at the uk living room then!

I have one of the early X boxes and PS3s,the X box is very low mileage and only really gets used for Gears Of War occasionally. The PS3 was replaced just out of warranty for free by Sony when it stopped reading discs and gets much much more use.

I have both and for me personally I'd say the xbox is the one for gaming. It does everything better in that area. I use my ps3 for multi media stuff like blu ray, music or even films from a USB stick. The xbox does the multi media thing too but in my opinion it doesn't do it as well as the ps3.

Love my Xbox 360; bought it so I could play Left 4 Dead, without having to shell out an arse and a leg for a gaming PC capable of running it. I can chat to my friends by using a party even if we're not playing the same game, and there are so many people on LIVE that matchmaking is rarely a problem. Online does cost a small amount on Xbox but there's more to it than just playing games. I also rather like the controller; I think it's as good as a controller could ever get for FPS games. Really, the next best thing up is a keyboard and mouse. I have a PS2 also which I like, but the controller (which is essentially the same as the PS3) is just not as good for FPS in my opinion.

PS3 gets my vote every time.
As others have said PS3 has free online play, more reliable, great exclusive titles, blu-ray + 3D, built-in wireless on all models etc. I also prefer the controller; I hate having my hands at two different angles to use the analogue sticks!
Xbox is significantly less reliable than PS3, the exclusive titles are pretty crap apart from fable in my opinion. Halo is shockingly bad, I don't know how it has the following it does. Gears is OK but poor compared to Killzone 3. GT series destroys Forza. Then there's titles like Little Big Planet on PS3 which Xbox has no rival to. And so on and so on.

The kinect and move are both just gimics I think, but then I hated the Wii too.

Get a PS3!

Buy both, better still buy 2 xbox 360's as it will break and a PS3. It all depends on the type of game you play I think. FPS then the 360 is your machine as it has a fair few exclusives.

Both have their good points and bad, free online for the PS3 everything built in like wireless where the older 360 doesn't but the new ones do have it.

I bought my PS3 close to release time ready for GT5 and I have waited a while for it but the bluray player and other media capabilities also played a part. The ability to use Iplayer, ITV player and 4OD are great recient additions.

The 360, online is better and more using it than the PSN but you do have to pay every 12 months for it. I also find the 360 controlers a little large and heavy due to the batteries after extended playing. The PS3 pads are lighter and more comfortable I feel.

2nd hand xboxes can be bought for very little if you want to dabble with one but I would buy a PS3 without a problem.

The main downside of the PS3 is the price, it is quite a bit more than the 360 but you do get a bit more from it other than a games machine. And if you want onile play then a few years of paying for live your going to be paying more over time.

the ps3 has wireless built in, and the xbox you have to buy a wireless dongle.

not with the Xbox Slim you dont, wireless built in..

my tuppence worth, I am a gaming freak and own all 3 of the current machines...TWICE :cuckoo:

Xbox wins for me, yes you have to pay £30 a year for Xbox Live but lets face it PS3 fanbois would fork out that eaisily if it meant they got a stable Black Ops online experience, which is massively flawed on PS3..

but what to suggest to someone buying one or t'other, look at the games/media capabilities..PS3 will have the edge as a media streamer and of course blu-ray, and Vidzone is a decent service and you have a web browser.... Xbox has a great film rental service that is currently ahead of PS3 and dedicated LastFM, Twitter, FB apps, media streaming also works well..

gamewise you have choices like, Gears of War or Resistance, Forza or GT5, and online wise gaming is and for a long time will be smoother/easier on Xbox.

non standard controller gaming, as I say I have all 3 twice and without a doubt Kinect is the most awesome, its so responsive and you can walk into the room where someone is playing and seconds later be in the game with them, its streets ahead tech wise... PS Move seems more responsive than Wii but it just comes across as a fake Wiimote.. one thing that I dont get with Kinect albeit is very impressive is non gaming control of the Xbox, I just prefer to use a controller to play/pause films and navigate the Xbox.

if you go for a Xbox DO NOT be tempted by a cheaper older model, go for the Slim, they have wireless built in and more stable hardware.

oh and a simple answer for me choosing Xbox over PS3, is a simple download game called Trials HD, seriously I have been a gaming addict for 30 yrs now and Trials HD will probably be top5 best games of all time, its just so addictive.

xbox everytime - better online communication - simply to use - the kinect has come out which destroys the wii so many games available for next to nothing

ps3 only thing is would say that would ever make me buy this ( getting one for christmas )
blu - ray and gran turismo 3 - online communication is poor

people always say better online community, I have no idea why at all, having ditched xbox for PS3 in Feb i've not noticed any difference online. still full games, still lots of communication between people in games etc.

loads of advantages with PS3, no subscription required to play online, blu-ray player, easy upgrades (no messing about with transfer kit like xbox) iPlayer, 4OD & ITVplayer etc. loads more films to rent/buy

Another thing the xbox does lots better than the ps3 is multitask.

Well my 2p, I've got 360, wii & PS3.
The 360 is great, much prefer the controller, Ps 3 stopped reading games after about 2yrs, (hoping to get a new one for xmas) and the wii is used for family games (my 4yr old loves wii mario karts).

If I had to pick one to keep it would be the PS 3, it looks awesome on the bravia, BR player and free internet.

Oh, and the 360 sounds like a harrier in hover mode!

It all depends what this guy wants? If I could only afford to have one out of the two and it was going to be in my living room then I'd pick the ps3 because it's the best multimedia console and it plays games ect.. I have my ps3 in the living room. I then have my xbox upstairs with a dedicated room for it just for games lol. Xbox is better games console

I own both - the PS3 rarely gets used, though not due to the difference in games or performance. The main advantage Xbox has is the user interface (it's so much more user friendly than the PS3 dashboard). Secondly, and most importantly, I flecking hate the PS3 controller, particularly poor for racing games. IMO, buy either an Xbox, or a PS3 and get an Xbox controller and one of them new controller converting gadgets!!

I must be drunk..
I could've sworn I saw feek starting a post about a gaming console?
This can't be true, his mobile phone is a brick and anything beyond dialing a number and sending is a text is way beyond him (his words ;) ).

Seriously Rob, it depends on a few factors.
Online gaming, the Xbox 360 wins hands down although online gaming is free on the PS3.
I still own my PS3 but I sold my Xbox 360 although I am thinking about getting a new one.
For gaming in general I prefered the Xbox 360 as I prefered the joypad better than the PS3.
For media, the PS3 has the upper hand, blu-ray player and it's fantastic for streaming from a computer.
I can't speak for the Xbox 360 as they were not available when I had mine but the PS3 supports BBC iplayer and they've added 40d and ITV's version in the latest updates.
If you are still looking to buy a console you are more than welcome to come and have play on my PS3, (I'm still near the previous house)
Although I don't have any games, I use the PS3 for streaming and I lost interest in playing games (although I am itching to play the latest call of duty).

Cheers guys for the advice. I went out and got a PS3. Am into FPS so I also picked up MOH modern warefare. As you said Darran, I 'm not really up on IT to a great degree, so I'll just use it for gaming until I learn how to use the multimedia side of it.
