PS Elements 9 vs CS2 (or later)

Having recently become a Mac user, I'm trying to get an idea of whether I need to consider forking out for the expensive version of PS, or can I survive with a reduced-spec version (Elements).

As there is a significant difference in terms of price, just wondering what kind of reduced functionality does PSE9 have when compared to the full PS (e.g. CS versions)? I understand from some brief reading around that PSE9 can perform approx. 40% (maybe even less) of the full blown PS functions, but does PSE9 still contain the following?

  • Selection tools
  • Lasso tools
  • Cloning tool
What would be the most significant lack of features/tools if using PSE9 instead of CS versions?

Elements 9 has Selection, Lasso and Cloning. It also has Layer Mask and Content Aware Fill.

You can download a 30 day free trial from Adobe. I would get a good instruction manual (local library will have some or can get some) -Scott Kelby perhaps - as it all seems a bit daunting to begin with.

when you get onto CS 5 the differences are huge- just buy what you can afford ( I have CS5 Extended) or what you feel you'll need

PSE 9 @ £50 ish is good enough for most hobby toggers :thumbs: I started with PSE 9 and worked my way up to CS 5
