PS Cs6 crop and resolution problem

I ahve made the leap from cs2 to cs6

In cs2 i can make a crop preset 7in x 5in and when I crop it auto does the resolution...

In cs6 the same crop is either 72 or i can set an actual resolution which can then shrink the picture ... Or I can set auto every time I save which is too slow an option for my work..

So i need to be able to set a crop size and it auto set the resolution without shrinking the pic

Any help appreciated :)

yes but then the dpi is set the same for all of them.. this is what I listed above ... its too slow if your editing 100 pics in a short time say.. it should just crop and auto set the dpi ..it does in cs2 so want to replicate that in cs6 which seems odd if i cant.. backward step even ..

A streamlined set of toolbar options includes a helpful Straighten tool, and aspect ratio controls you can adjust while a crop is active in the image window. (To maintain the current aspect ratio or resolution, right-click the image to access additional options.)

  • To crop an image, click the Crop tool
    SP_Crop_Lg_N_D.png
    in the toolbar. Then either adjust default crop borders in the image window, or drag in the window to start with specific borders.
  • To correct image perspective, hold down the Crop tool and select the Perspective Crop tool

thanks for that but yeagh.. I can do all that pretty easy.. didnt know about the right click .. but none of those work..

in cs2 when i crop a 7x5 at around 50% the picture is around 50% the size of the original and the resolution has changed and its say 400+
in cs6 when i crop a 7x5 at around 50% the picture is around 50% the size of the original and the resollution is 72
OR
in cs6 when i crop a 7x5 at around 50% the picture is whatver size i manual set the resolution to

What i need is cs6 to act like cs2 does but can tfind out how.. all the option on the right click dont offer a solution..


Hopefully i am explaining this correctly :)

That's about as helpful as I can be TBH,
I just found the tut. While I was looking at something else.
I went from CS3 to CS5 and stayed with it.
Hopefully someone will know :)
 
Thanks though.. maybe you can help with a no brainer then... I am really poor on the print side of things... As it doesnt effect the pic quality.. any reason not to save in 72 and then when prining simply up it ?
 
You've probably asked the worse person you could have :D

But I'm sure I read somewhere on here that you can print around 10x8 at 72.?
And wouldn't you lose definition if you went from 72 to say 300 for printing?
No idea really just guessing as, as above I rarely print anything.

Its strange that CS6 is "shrinking" the picture though.
Mine start out at 240 and stay that way when cropping,
unless I tell it other wise.

No it doesnt shrink it.. it keeps it correct but at 72.. It will shrink it if say i set 300 resolution then crop it then will shrink it if it should be higher... if you follow? :)

I'm a bit confused because i think you're stating ppi/dpi as just "resolution" in certain places?
They're just numbers applied at printing, so you can save at 72 or what ever you like and then just change for printing. The actual image resolution is what matters for image quality in the stored file.

Yes I know they are just numbers... I know it doesn effect image quality as stated in post #8
But having to change resolution when printing is more work.. I sell a lot of prints...

therefore the way cs2 handles the crop and adds a resolution (not a set size) is perfect and thats what i am trying to replicate without adding more work for me.. get cs6 to do what cs2 does.. whcih is what i ahve stated since post #1 .... ta:)
 
OK here goes..

I ahve cs2 and cs6 open now.. i ahve the same picture in both.. the picture is 5184 x3456 and resolution is 72 dpi

in cs2 i crop it 7in x 5in from top left corner a large crop for testing... width box has 7in height box has 5in and resolution box is blank... the resulting pic is 4838 x 3456 and resolution is now 691.143 dpi

exact same picture, exact same crop in cs6 using the 7x5 preset is 4838 x 3456 and resolution is still 72

exact same picture, exact same crop in cs6 using the 7x5 that i manaly set 7in x 5 in (no resolution option) is 2100 x 1500 and resolution 300 (which i didnt set)

So only cs2 works as I want it.. I need cs6 to keep the right size and offer up a resolution... I need it to do this every time i crop as i work on hundreds of pics at a time.. so i dont want extra buttons.. i dont want to save as 72 because i sell pics and would ahve to keep changing it back..

So can anyone setup a 7x5 crop that doesnt save at 72 and doesnt shrink the picture and just works when you crop.. like cs2 ?

anyone... pretty please? :)
 
DONE IT!!!!!!

Lots of trial and error.... the way i say a crop preset is to set it up and then the crop drop down theres an icon top right that lets you save the crop...

however.. if you start to crop a pic and then press R it brings up a box.. set the width and height and leave the resolution blank ....

Now using the new 7x5 (default 7x5 saves as 72 dpi) (made 7x5 saves as 300 dpi) the picture crops and does not shrink and saves at the right resolution.. works exactly the same as cs2
