PS CS4 or Elements?

I've got access the the newest version of elements and also CS4.

I'm a total novice to photography, is it worth trying to figure out CS4 straight away or should I just use elements (which seems much more user friendly) to start with.

As a beginner is there anything I'm likely to want to do that elements can't?
Sorry if this is a daft question, like I say I'm a novice!

If you are a total novice then I would suggest you start with Elements. You could get overwhelmed with CS4 from the start. CS4 has a lot of functions you will probably never use, and the experience you gain with Elements will stand you in good stead for CS4 if you decide to go that way.

I'd suggest you get a book to teach you the basics of Elements so that you get a good grounding and don't waste time trying to figure out how to do things.
 
Mmmmmm, I would say the opposite but then having photoshop for years when I looked at elements I ran a mile.
 
Which ever you go for just get yourself a good book at the same time (or look at the many video photoshop resource online).

Neither are very intuitive to the absolute beginner.

I would probably advise going for Elements initially.
 
I would say Elements, the full version of Photoshop has got so many ways of doing everything it can get confusing, with Elements you can build a good foundation in editing and carry it onto the full version of Photoshop when you feel that Elements is limiting you.

Plus Elements is a good £400 cheaper - that could be a new lens!
 
Yeah I've already got both on my PC so it's pretty much just about which is better suited for me. I think I'll give PS a try. I've used it before but a good few years ago and not on pictures I'd taken myself it was to create some maps for an Economics project. (just some basic image editing)

I'll start having a play with it again and see if I can get the hang of it.
