So I can add adjustment layers and tweak. :) The question is how do I apply the tweaks to just some parts of an image - does it all come down to painstaking selections and brush work, erasing parts of layers were adjustment is no required ?

I realise this may take a long answer so I'd be happy with links to info about this.

Do a search for using layer masks and all will be revealed or not (a small pun there) and you will get a better understanding of using masks to reveal your editing. Masks are none destructive and are a godsend in any PP work.

If memory serves me well: Add your adjustment and in the white layer mask click
Control +i and this should invert your layer mask to black. This will hide your changes so paint on the mask with a white brush to reveal your "tweaks".
Give it a go.

Thanks very much Tom and Southsideblues. !

I gave that a go, I'm much obliged to you. I see how it works, and I'm excited. I might have come back with some more questions if thats OK

Another way of doing selective adjustments is to use, e.g. the Quick Selection tool to select the part you want to adjust, then click the Adjustment Layer icon. Choose, say, Levels, and the adjustment layer appears with a ready-made mask using your selection. Drag the sliders around and only the bit you selected will change. Sounds more complicated than it is. Try it; you'll like it. :)
