I notice that 7DS have Provia 100F 5 packs for £23.99 compared to £29.99 for Velvia 100. Is the price difference reflective of the quality/results? Thoughtso nthe qualities of both would be appreciated.
 
Don't think one can be said to be better than the other, just different. Provia is more neutral in colour rendering, Velvia more vivid. As a very rough rule of thumb I'd use Provia for people and Velvia for anything but people.
 
I'd use Provia for almost anything and Velvia when I have someone nearby who can help me with exposure?
 
TBH, I would go for Provia for pretty much everything unless you intend showing the slides with a projector rather than scanning them. A little PP can replicate the Velvia vividness and save you the few quid for another roll of Provia!
 
Velvia is warmer and more saturated, but the key issue is its rubbish at natural skin tones.

So if there's gonna be skin shoot Provia, if not Velvia is beautiful, personally I prefer Velvia 100F, can't see much difference between Velvia 100 and 50.

One thing I do know is, you can't make Velvia from Provia with PP, its one or the other, you can saturate Provia but it ain't never gonna be Velvia..:)
 
For most things, Provia. Velvia is a special film and sadly I have a feeling one day we will talk about it like people talk about Kodachrome, and for certain applications there is no substitute, but it certainly isn't a general purpose film by any stretch of the imagination.
 
Well, Velvia 100 has higher contrast, saturation, and less shadow and highlight detail over Provia 100F. Velvia 100 seems to enhance red and magenta more so than any other Fuji slide film, and is not really a film which I've ever accepted compared to RVP 50. I find Provia neutral perhaps varying a tad cyan on occasion depending on light conditions. Between the two at 100Asa is has to be Provia, as Velvia 100 is IMO and very uninteresting film, I have used Provia about three or four times for general shooting situation and the outcome is a well balanced and representative film.

Thanks guys. The reason I ask is not really financial, I want to take some portrait shots of my friends (yes, I do have some friends) when we go away at New Year and I thought as well as b&w I would like to try some slide as well. So Provia it is then.

I have tried both films out on both 35mm and 120, and tbh, I like them both.

Provia is a great general shooting film and I use it more than Velvia. I find Velvia very difficult to use, and I have a hit rate of about 5%.
 
And for 35mm remember that Agfa Precisa is Provia at around half the price sometimes.
 
Provia is more subtle for general shooting and anything involving people who aren't a shade of orange, but for slap around the face landscape stuff it has to be Velvia 50. Just make sure you don't shoot people with it, it sort of does this to the skin tones...

But Rob, from what you have told me Paul is actually this colour (or worse) anyway....

There seems to be some confusion between Velvia 100 and 50, a lot of the coments seem to relate to 50 rather than the 100 asked about.

I'd agree with the vote Provia if you have any people in the scenes.

Note you really want to be using a calibrated monitior to get the best out of these. In my alternate reality I actually prefer Velvia 100 to 50 and generally prefer it to Provia its just I haven't been able to get my hands on any in 10x8 for a few years that I use Provia in that size.
