Hello everyone :)

I'm wanting to get more into portrait photography, and not sure what to do about lighting and backgrounds to make it look professional.

I dont have much money to spend on things but i wondered if i could get advice, or if theres ways around it? e.g homemade lighting or something.....

Thanks Jen

If you have a flash and off camera flash cord, you could get a small softbox, Lastolite do one and Flash In The Pan on here does a knock off version, that will give you a great little light source that can make your portraits look more professional..

I only have the flash on the camera, should have stated that.... oops.

I am looking into getting something like that too but really am starting from stratch and not really sure whats best for a beginner. Thought this would be the best place to ask!

Thanks

What camera?
Consider using natural light only and reflectors, these can be home made and a little noise from high ISO's can be a good thing too.
I don't always use flash.

Does flash in the pan have a thread for them or do i need to get in touch with him?

Ok, i'll give that a look in to thanks.

If you look in the 'For Sale section' you will find a few threads where he sells kit.. by all accounts its very good stuff, and very well priced too..

Click here but have a look around in the general area as im sure he has more than one thread..

If you dont have any flashes other than the one on your camera, why not look into natural light! there are many great photographers that rarely use flash and concentrate on using the great continuous light source in the sky... window light is fantastic! especially if there are nets curtains ect to soften it..

Good luck with your journey.. its going to be a bumpy but great and scenic ride..

Sorry i've got a canon 350D.

Great thank you, yeah thats given me a great idea cause we've got a reformed loft which has 2 good skylights so i'll give that a go! Thanks again.

First thing to get (if you've got lots of natural light available), without spending a fortune is a reflector, once you start getting into flashes etc you'll need to take a deep breath and prepare for some open-wallet surgery

Without doing Flash In the Pan out of a sale, a cheapie reflector can be made from a sheet of white foam core board and some silver foil. That and natural light is a good start.

To soften the light coming in your windows. Get a couple of white shower curtains. Argos have them for very cheap.

Yup, even a sheet of white card will do the job, if the op is on a really tight budget then a trip to Poundland can unearth some useful items that can be put into service as diffusers or reflectors..
