This is a rough drawing and price estimate for my prototype floating hide. I know it's missing a few things like support rods for a camo cover and the cover itself, but I plan on just using my DIY "bag hide" rather than make another cover. The rods/sockets will be sorted after rough construction. Not shown in the drawing is the shoulder/retention/saddle strap that can be connected to the D-rings.

It will be 4" tall and I expect it will sit 1" or less in the water. The recessed areas for holding stuff and the head/camera are 2" tall which should place the lens at ~ 6-8" above waterline depending on the head used and lens/lens foot. It is designed to fold in half for carry/storage at ~ 42"x24"x8" and 42"x48"x4" deployed. It will be made from 2 layers of 2" closed cell foam board with a lightweight fiberglass skin and wood reinforcements in critical areas.

I think it offers more than the inflatable MrJanGear hide (~ $700+sh) and is comparable to the floating-hide product (~ $1200+sh). I'm looking for any feedback on the design before I proceed with construction.

Man I can get out of control easily; I was seconds away from buying carbon/kevlar twill fabric to cover it in... that would have increased my cost by at least 1/3 and it would have been about pointless. It would have looked prettier (until camo'd) assuming I could manage to do a nice job of it.

Pretty much everything has been ordered and total cost looks like it will be around $150.

So far:
2 SS spring latches- $ 7.58
2 rubber handles- $ 6.57
2 3.5" SS door hinges- $ 17.09
2 6ft black nylon rods- $ 12.58
5 sqm fiberglass matting- $ 7.99
96oz epoxy resin- $ 49.00
$ 100.81

Only thing left is the foam board ($35), and some minor odd items which I probably already have... but that's assuming I don't mess anything up and have to buy replacements ;)

Steven, did you ever finish your floating hide?

I am just finishing mine and wonder if you have any recommendations regarding a decent, but inexpensive dry suit?

Cheers
Glynn

Yes, kind of. I made one with inflatable floats that breaks down completely and stores in a fairly small bag.
I don't have a dry suit... I have a wet suit, but I seldom use it either.
