Protection From Damp

Hi all,

I've just got my first DSLR (well, second, if you include the faulty one I had to return for replacement), and was wondering where/how best to store it and the lenses.

I have read a few instances of fungus growing on lenses because of moisture, so would like to do my best to prevent it happening. Not leaving them in a camera bag is one suggestion I read on here, I think. Silica gel would be a good idea as well, I guess.

My flat is quite humid for some reason, so I tend to keep a dehudifier on overnight, which is generally full by morning. Will this be enough though, if the equipment is just kept shelved, or in a cupboard, or should I be doing more?

Would love some suggestions, if at all possible.

I keep all my kit in Pelicases... no troubles

When I am not using them I keep all my lenses and bodies in those ‘Lock and Lock’ food containers you get from Sainsbury’s, John Lewis etc. they are completely airtight. They do various sizes the largest ones will take a medium format camera body.

I just keep all my camera gear in my camera rucksack (Dakine mission photo pro) with about 8 silica gel packets.

This thread was sparked by me reading about someone storing their kit in a proper camera bag, and one of their lenses was killed by fungus, so I'm reluctant to rely on one. Especially knowing how moist my flat is.

The last thing you want is moist AND dark conditions, which is what causes fungus to thrive, so leaving the kit in your bag in a moist flat is definitely not a good idea.

Ditto, the silica gel packets, can be bought online quite cheapily. Chuck a few in a locked case and all should be fine.

Heheh! You are someone that left the hardtop on the car when you travelled two hours North. I guess you're not used to these arctic temperatures.

Thanks folks. Silica gel seems imperative. A Pelicase should be my next purchase. Excellent. Thanks for your advice. I'll probably start taking some photos soon too.
