I would like to shoot some photos of my car, but I only have my on camera flash, no posh lighting. Can anyone recommend any good locations in West Yorks? I have been trying to keep my eyes open for suitable locations for a couple of months without much success.

Cheers
Ian

Depends on what you want from a location, I used to drive around that area alot and lots of derelict buildings, gorgeous scenery, urban meets countryside, you name it you have it !

All you need is a tripod, and don't use any flash.

I don't know specifics in west yorks, but I remember when I lived in leeds for a bit there were some fabulous disused buildings dotted about the place that would work.
Also look out for stone rail bridges with strip lighting on the road underneat them - works a treat.
Don't rule out shopping centre /supermarket carparks at dusk. If you stop down to F8ish then you can get the starburst effect from the lights.

IMO you will spend months looking for the perfect location - then it will turn out to be a bit pants. Get out there and shoot - you will get better at photographing your car so when that location does come up you will make the most of it.

Good advice, I think commercial buildings or disused buildings would work best as a backdrop, although from time to time I have seen shots with graffiti as a backdrop, they can look bloody good too. :)

you don't need flash, you just need a nice contrasting
background that makes the car stand out. you don't want anything growing out the top like a lamp post or have too many distrations in the background.

don't photograph a white car against a white background lol

also don't show the tyre tread, make sure the wheels are turned slightly and don't go too acute/obtuse for a 3/4 shot 30dgrees should be fine. Don't take them all at eye level.

this is a good example of a simple plain shot. nothing fancy about it

Most of mine are around West Yorks, if your after urban and safe I'd suggest drive into Leeds and look for the dark corners (the £4 a day car park on whitehall road is my fav) Holbeck has some nice quite areas. Head out towards Sherburn for some easy to come by countryside failing that a pop out to beyond shipley and Salts mill for some industrial backdrops.

Salts Mill is a great idea

I should be picking up a tripod in the next few days, so will be trying to get some good shots. I will post the pics. Thanks for the advice guys.

i like the 350z shot, especially the last one, B&W type background and colour on car with light angles from front.

how was that done, lens, and i assume been photoshopped

Red is a great colour car.

You can do stuff right outside your house.

This was taken using two battery powered camcorder lights and a 5 sec exposure.

This one has the strip light reflected from the garage in it...

The yellow light is the street light. On the top pic I climbed the street light to put a bin bag over the top to try and cut it out.

and don't discount top floor of car parks at dusk. Red car, dark blue sky, yellow lights...

first tvr pic is cool
would be even cooler to see a pic of the setup (get an idea on light equipment, angle, distance etc.)

If you dont have flashes then maybe have a look for an underground carpark, set custom WB, take multiple exposures and have fun in PS with layers and the eraser.

one problem, i don't have a computer capable of photoshop at the moment (next purchase for 2009)

Lighting not an issue. Pop out to some where with interesting scenery - say Menwith Hill. Make sure to havea tripod, long lenses and preferably some sort of head scarf (it may be chilly).

Line up and get ready. When the friendly men turn up they will bring a variety of coloured flashing lights.

snap away.

Is that the same sort of scenery as at Beachy Head (where they put a phone box so potential suicides would have a way of getting help?)

I am not really into cars and was just flicking though this thread until I saw what sort chilliz has - do you fancy coming down to Sussex to do the shoot and going home without it as my husband, for some strange reason to do with the cost that I cannot totally comprehend has refused to buy me one :)

Ha! Not quite. Its one of the US spy bases - golfballs, CIA listening station place. Theres a 'peace camp' as well.

You are welcome to come and have a play :lol::lol:

The car was my mid life crisis thing, I couldn`t afford it and it was inpractical, but I had to have it. I had a 5 month wait and when the morning came for me to collect it, I was literally shaking. I`ve had it nearly 5 years and it`s paid for and I can`t ever imagine selling it. :)

Here`s my baby, not a very inspiring pic though
