Organisation, organisation organisation.

Unles somebody is marshalling the kids for you, many will be reluctant to have their pictures taken.

Many of them will want groups of friends. Very few, unless somebody is organising, will want individual shots, which is unfortunate because those are the ones parents want and parents are the ones who order.

I find I do best displaying pictures at school events later (eg at the leavers awards evenings in the autumn.)
 
i did a prom a few weeks ago! went very very well!

i work at the school which was kind of handy as i could display all the picture's on monday and then take orders! out of 200+ kids i have had around 35 orders in the first week with 2 more weeks to go!

for me what seemed to go down well is catching them as they arrive and just be friendly with them! :)

Do a 'package deal': you will shoot their peer group after you've done the individuals.
It pays (literally) to know which way your bread is buttered.
