Ok, so I've got a domain, installed Pixelpost, activated Google Analytics, submitted the site to Google.

Is that it? Or do I have to do more to get Google crawling and indexing?

And what's the next stage?

I will put a link in my siggy on here once I am happy with things. I then believe there are various 'sites' I can sign up on to promote myself... like sort of webring things, but for photoblogs. Coolphotoblogs is one I have seen before. Are there more? Where would I find a list?

I'm not looking to promote from a business perspective, just as an enthusiastic amateur. I do want to do it properly though as you never know how things may develop over time.

Ive recently been through a similar process, links in help increase your standings in google so some shameless plugging helps, send links to friends and family....get them to add them on bebo/facebook, the more hits (meaningless or not) the better!

Also read up on things like home page title, meta tags etc

Ill be watching this thread to see if theres any other tips going!

To get any kind of decent rankings in google, your title, meta tags, and keywords must match up.

Try and promote your site for the target area you are after, i.e. if you were from Hertfordshire, stuff like Photographer in Hertfordshire, Hertfordshire portrait photos etc... google is flooded with generic terms :)

Used to do this for a while as a second job, takes time to get it right, and it's better to be number 1 or 2 for local hits that number 5000 for photographer lol

To get in google quicker, add your link to popular forums (such as this one) for the google spiders to grab it, it'll get you in a lot quicker :)

Besides sorting SEO, adding your site to GOOGLE LOCAL is free and very effective at getting you on page 1

uhh..not really.

The inbound links need to be from relevant and good sites for the link to be classed as anything half decent.

Getting high up in Google will not happen over night, its a process that will take alot of time and effort.

To get the ball rolling, submit your site to niche directories, dont bother with search engine submission, the search engines will find you if you are linked to from other sites that are indexed.

The page title and meta description tags are the only 2 you need to worry about. Dont keyword stuff them, make sure they are relevant to your pages.

And lastly - Content is king. Build for your users, not the search engines.

:)

since ive been up and running on my site ( personal use only ) i can put my name in google and i am first on the list. now is that because my name is unfamiliar and thats the reason its gone stright to the top... dunno???

PS. ive not done any of the above in terms of boosting my site, all i can say is that its always been top of the search, or am i just lucky!!

Wrong. Content is king. Forget the meta tags, that's old technology. Your content must be relevant.

Also submitting your site to indexing services will only be detrimental. Best way is to let 'nature' do it's thing. Make sure you provide great content, relevant networking helps too. Google search works mostly on relevance. Meta tags on their own won't help you there, at least not any more.

Top of the search for what term or phrase?

i see what you mean by the way in which you can be found... i just think in simple terms whereas if i where to meet someone and give them my details they might not remember all of my details but they would more than likely remember my surname EVEREST, they could go stright to google and enter "EVEREST" and "photography" in a sub search and im there first in the list. hope that makes sense

Well it has been over 2 years (I think closer to 3!) that I've done any of this stuff, certainly used to work! :bonk:

Without the content it's a total waste of time anyway! lol

Another quick question, this time in relation to Coolphotoblogs.com

What are coolpoints? Can I get discount on my groceries?

Thanks for the vfxy link Garry
