Need a little help, a friend of mine hand knits little hats, boots cocoons for new born babies and has ask me if i can take some pictures for her. She didn't want anything special but thought this would be a nice time to try out Product Photography :)

what i am trying to do is a straight downward shot with a white background.

I have tried firing my flash under the the base of a white paper roll with 2 Smart flash 200 with umbrellas for key light from the top. It's just not working on the lighter coloured hats.

What is the best way to go about this?

Have you thought about using a contrasting background - dark for light products, light for darker products.

I agree. Or, to maintain consistency, just use grey for everything.
Just about every subject can be photographed against white if it really needs to be, but it takes space, time, equipment and knowledge to get perfect results. Without all of these things in play, it's often better to forget about white.
