Just short of a month ago I bought Photoshop CS6 for Windows from a UK website (genuine) as it was cheaper to download and then apply the serial number (£349:00).
However I now discover that the product is under a Volume Licensing Agreement and I cannot register it directly under my Adobe ID.
Adobe Support assure me that it is a legal copy and genuine purchase but as I don't have an order number beginning with '13', (I do have an Adobe License Order & License Reference), they cannot assist me with the registration and have advised me to contact the supplier for the correct order number, which I have done.

What are the implications/limitations of a product bought under a Volume Licensing Agreement?

its only that the key could potentially be used on several machines.

So I could use it on all my machines ... or just it's used by everyone else who bought from them?

Only issue here is the legality of buying a single licence out of a volume one. I'm sure the license restricts this

Adobe have been given all of the 'numbers' and have confirmed it is a legal copy if that makes sense.

depends how many licences you purchased.

Ah, so others may have bought a license from the same 'volume' and hence have the same serial number as me and that's why I can't register it to me individually?

yeah pretty much..

say for example mr X had a 25 user volume licence with the product key 1234-1234-1234-1234. that product/key would be registered to them.

if mr X then sold that key to 25 individuals (as well as breaking the EULA) they wouldn't be able to register it individually.

personally id be asking for a refund, that's got dodgy written all over.

Yea it's will allready be registered to a company probably.

The license is genuine but reselling volume licences is dodgy and can get it revoked.

It was bought from an apparently legit website www.isoftware.co.uk and from the following chat transcript extract does not appear to be dodgy - it also works and updates.

Roger: Can you tell me why please - is it an illegal copy that I have been sold?
Sameena: It is a legal copy Roger, however if you have purchased the software the reseller should provide you with the order number.
Sameena: So that you can login to licensing website and view the serial numbers already registered under licensing website.

Would they tell me it was "a legal copy" if it was dodgy?

its legal in the sense that its running a genuine key, but im pretty sure adobe frown on reselling of volume licences. and like I say the individual wont be able to register it (and probably resell when no longer needed).

Ok ta - I'll press them on it :)

Who would know? Its a volume licence.......Not strictly legal but practiced by quite a few.

We'll see what response I get from them.

This is about as legal as using a crack!

I don't know of a single major vendor who allows reselling of volume licences.

And where exactly did I say resell anything?

I'm sure if that was the case Adobe would not have assured me that I had a legal license.

I don't have an Adobe Volume EULA to hand (I do in the office), but like almost all vendors, Volume Licences are designed for a single organisation buying in 'volume' and cannot be sold, lent or transferred.

I'd be VERY surprised if the person who you dealt with at Adobe wasn't mistaken.

Perhaps he/she only checked the validity of the key and not the intended usage? i.e. a legitimate key being resold to multiple customers, which is almost certainly against their licensing.

You didn't!

I meant the retailer reselling a volume licence key to multiple customers would almost certainly result in the customer being unlicensed, just as using cracked software is unlicensed!

Well it was an Adobe Volume Licensing Rep that I spoke with, (I was transferred to Volume Licensing from General Support) and I told them how I got it and from whom, so I would hope that they weren't mistaken but I will pursue it to the end and see.

When you speak to them, definitely get them to put it into writing if they say it is OK. I would ask that they also specify the the licence is eligible for upgrades.

I haven't had much dealings with Adobe's volume licensing team, but I hope they are not anything like some Microsoft reps, where you often get a different answer from each person you speak with.

There won't be any upgrades to CS6 now that Creative Cloud is here but it definitely updates.

Well isoftware don't accept that there is a problem BUT are sending me a full retail boxed replacement at no further charge - just had a FedEx confirmation of despatch.
