Processing .NEF files

I am on the brink of buying PSE 8 to work with .NEF files from my D300s
(problems with PSE 7 mentioned in another thread).

Before I buy can anyone recommend similarly priced software that they thing may be better than PSE 8 (it must also open .NEF files from a D700).

I see Lightroom mentioned here quite a lot.
Does it have any advantages over PSE 8/

You might want to check out this vid on LR3. I have used both Elements 8 and LR3 with the D300. Nikon NX2 should be considered also. All 3 packages have features unique to themselves.

Had a cursory look at the vid. There is a lot there so I'll go back later.
I have had Nikon software on and off my pc from time to time. Never found it too user friendly (not that much processing software is).
