Has this cave been certified by the British Geological Survey as being in a seismically benign area, and are we wearing hard hats?
I've just been reading the green paper about lighting this cave.
According to the WHO
air pollution caused by fossil fuels is confirmed as carcinogenic to humans therefore all carbon based fuels will be prohibited as a means of providing power and light to the cave.
Nuclear power is obviously deemed far too risky due to the carcinogenic effects of radioactive waste, so consideration has been given to alternatives such as solar and wind power.
Unfortunately early studies show that
solar panels emit hazardous "electronic waste" just like mobile phones, computers and TVs which may be linked to an increased risk of cancer.
And although further research is needed into
"wind turbine syndrome" and the associated health effects, this committee considers that it's only a matter of time before it's conclusively proven to be detrimental to human health and has also ruled that out as an option.
In conclusion, to ensure that everybody is kept safe and secure from any possible carcinogens the cave will be permitted to be illuminated by natural light only.
Since direct contact with sunlight increases the likelihood of contracting skin cancer by 99%* the cave skylight will be fitted with UV protective glass and will only be exposed during non daylight hours to moonlight.
As a result of this precaution, the cave's inhabitants will be required to adjust their body clocks to a nocturnal cycle.
This does raise serious concerns about a lack of vitamin D within the inhabitants
which has also been linked to a possible increased risk of cancer.
In order to counter this risk all cave-dwellers will be given daily injections of Vitamin D and a study has been commissioned to review the health risks of over-dependence on artificial vitamins.
Unfortunately, another possible side effect of adjusting to a nocturnal cycle is
sleep deprivation and the associated increased risk of cancer.
To date, this committee has been unable to find a viable solution to this last problem . . .
In short, we're all doomed.
*I may have just invented that particular statistic
