I have a 60d, only since Christmas, and am struggling with exposure. On the screen everything looks ok after the shot, but when downloaded everything looks over exposed. Has anyone else had a problem with over exposure with 60d, if so how do you solve it. I dont want to always underexpose in case that is wrong. I will admit I am a beginner so struggling a bit. Doing a btec level 2 course and we are supposed to only use manual which is fine but can't understand why when camera says perfect exposure on normal shot ts is overexposed. Please help!

Thanks

Hi Tina, welcome. When you say it looks alright on the screen do you mean when just looking at the LCD or when looking at the histogram? It's best to check the histogram to check that your exposure is correct.

In addition to the above, if the image looks correctly exposed on the camera's screen but looks overexposed on your computer's screen, it's possible that your computer screen's settings need adjusting.

Edit: Here's a quick guide that might help you quickly calibrate your monitor's brightness: http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/viewing.html

Hi Tina

As above posts really,

another area to look at - what is the screen brightness on the 60D LCD - if this is too dark the photo thats is overexposed will look okay on the LCD...

Hope this is of some help...

Come back with some settings of a photo that you think is over-exposed, post one up here and more advice can ge given

Hi Tina, you mention you are struggling with exposure but just to say things look better on the screen and not on your pc is a little vague. If you can post a couple of examples of your overexposed shots Tina complete with exif it will greatly assist people offering help  Do not get too hung up on either under or over exposing slightly as it is something people do manualy anyhow to give them some control over the shot. So long as either is not OTT then it is not a problem to sort out in PP, as mentioned checking your Histogram is the way to do it.

Are you told to shoot in Raw on your course, we are told to in lv3. It's something I have always done and would suggest it as it gives you a lot of control during PP.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I wasn't sure how to upload photos to the site so they are on my flickr account. Any advice would be gratefully received, basically the lcd screen on my camera makes them look ok, I have the slider dead centre to say exposure is correct and yet when I download to the computer they are overexposed. I try to underexpose most of the time to try and rectify this but can't understand why I need to. I have started to shoot in raw but can't download raw to CS4 on my computer, it doesn't recognise the files! Also the cd that came with my canon wont load either, says I am not the administrator on my mac!! I can import raw into lightroom so I can rectify the overexposure in that but would like to know where I am going wrong. Sorry for the long note! Tina

PS will be heading over to the lighting forums later as I have just bought a second hand set of Bowens Pro lite and dont have a clue how to set it up, not doing well really!

It would be worth checking updates to both Ps and Adobe Camera RAW. Then you should be able to open the files.

Have checked updates but will try again. I must be doing something wrong. Thanks

I don't see any obvious over-exposure on your images. I can't see any significant blown areas.
But I calibrate my laptop screen.. do you calibrate your screen?

I think you have a monitor problem, not a camera problem.

I have re calibrated my screen, looks very bright now, think it has improved the images though. Downloaded an update to PS4 but still can't open RAW files. Back to the drawing board. Please feel free to leave feedback on pics on flickr, thanks. Tina

Also make sure you enable highlight alert on your camera, this will show you clearly any blown out highlights( blinkies)also the preview on the back of your screen is a jpeg, even if you shoot in raw,so you have a bit of a safety margin.

Please feel free to leave feedback on pics on flickr, thanks. Tina

That would be difficult: you seem to have disabled comments on your Flickr account!

Oh, and the pictures look fine to me..

Oops sorry about that, I have rectified it now. Said I was a beginner. I have a long way to go. Thanks anyway

Nothing wrong with those images - they all look perfectly exposed to me - shadows show detail and highlights not blown at all.

I think your monitor needs calibration regarding the gamma settings.

If you download this calibration image you can set the Gamma settings on your monitor:

Just set your monitor so the B/W bars on the R/H side are all visible on your monitor.

Hi

You might need to go direct to the Adobe site and find the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw - I'm sure I've known before of the in-app updater not always finding the most recent compatible version!

I am not sure with Mac`s Tina but if you have installed Canon`s DPP software and it is all up to date you should be able to run it. With windows you can ( if need be ) right click and Run as Administrator

Tried loading software again on my mac book but didn't work, either the disc is faulty or my mac book is too old or full. Getting new mac soon so will wait until then.
