problems with chrome

I usually use Chrome as my browser, but this evening it's thrown a wobbly. It was ok up until a couple of hours ago.

I'm running Windows 8.1.

Chrome is not filling the screen when opened, this applies in Windows 8 mode and Desktop mode. There are large black borders to the sides and below, Chrome itself is displaced upwards with the top part of the window off the top of the screen. The cursor is displaced, to select something in Chrome I need to click with the cursor some distance below the target point.

I've checked for updates, scanned for malaware, uninstalled Chrome, restarted the computer, re-installed Chrome.. repeated each of these several times and every time I reinstall Chrome it's behaving exactly the same way.

I'm open to suggestions as to what to try next, and all help and advice would be appreciated! Thanks for reading.

Install Firefox.

Had nothing but problems with chrome, including those mentioned above. Firefox isn't perfect but it works for me.

have you tried deleting chrome's profile (or renaming) it?

I don't use Win8, but on Windows 7 this folder is located :

C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default

Even if you reinstall chrome, the profile gets left behind.

I think the user profile set-up is different in Windows 8, I've seen that suggested for Win7 but the folder structure doesn't match what I can see on Explorer.

I don't know how, but I've solved the displaced cursor element. Chrome is now usable in Win8 mode, but still not full screen and not usable in Desktop mode.

I've found one similar reported problem online from last week, and I think this is connected to a Chrome update recently released. The problem is connected to the Google App Shelf feature. I'm guessing I picked up the update this evening and this is what Google have admitted is a bug - although for iOS users this is what Apple would call a "feature" ;)

If you copy/paste the following into the "Run" box you'll get to the right place:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data\

Rename the 'Default' folder in there and you'll start with a clean profile. You can always delete the new re-created one and rename it back if doesn't fix your problem.

Ok, got it working.. I couldn't see the usual tool icon but using Alt-F I've got into the Chrome settings and switched off hardware acceleration. It's seems a bit slower than normal, but it is working.

Thanks for the suggestions. IE is my fall-back browser, I haven't used Firefox in ages.. I think it stopped being a front-runner among browsers some time ago. My partner persists with it, but generally swears at it rather than by it.

You've both got it wrong, IE is where it's at.

Shock / horror o_O

I find that some web pages don't work properly with Chrome and need to switch to Firefox.

A man that knows what he is talking about, IE 11 is excellent so far.

Chrome was like AOL, tried to take over my PC and spread everywhere, took ages to get rid of it!

Just tried the latest version of IE (11) same old same old! "IE has stopped working" gave up after 30 minutes.

not really. FF is bloated steaming pile of... code these days. chrome is well, just chrome.

IE is actually pretty good these days. i think people get hung up on all of the issues of the earlier versions.

Id actually beg to differ, Chrome on 3 machines [Macs] in our house has over recent months become unstable, glitchy, just an utter pain in the orifice. Only switched to it when firefox became a bloated pile of unstable tosh. I loathe safari almost as much as that piece of crap IE [yee, use on W8 machines at the office and its utter garbage too, slow, buggy....on brand new installs btw, before you blame user error/clogged machines] - so with a heavy heart went back to firefox a short while ago and whatever their problems were they have certainly sorted them. Its quick, smooth running and back to being the pleasure it was several years ago. So nerh! :p

Spot on Yv!
IE is (was) on an almost brand new Lenovo B590, so not clogged. It was configured by my Son who knows what he is doing, (he works in IT support)

Sorry yv but while it used to be pretty good FF these days is utter tosh. And I use it every day along side IE (I like to keep my personal and work browsing in separate browsers). Memory leaking, unstable, flash grinds the plugin process to a halt, some pages not rendering correctly (it was a horrid 6 months while they fixed the random hanging and/or complete crashing when using hotmail) etc.

IE is a breeze in comparison. It's the only browser on my personal boxes.

I agree with neil_g on this, I'm an IE guy, although I do use Chrome Canary and find it far faster than standard chrome for some reason! No problems with IE11 for me

The main thing I like about IE (since IE10) is that if a badly scripted website crashes the browser it only takes out that one tab leaving the rest working normally.
The Firefox "this is embarrassing message" that appears far to often when it locks up and needs to be crashed out via task manager is one reason I have not used Firefox for nearly 2 years. Google Chrome is now a bloated fat monster of a browser that tries to do far too much.

This may be slightly off topic, but when using my nexus 7 and chrome if i type a reply to a thread its really and laggy and doesn't behave right, has anyone else had this problem ?
