Hi,

I recently updated to Windows 10 and it all seemed to work and then...

When viewing some photos the arrows to the left and right were missing but they were there when viewing other pictures. This seemed totally random.

Some pictures would be skipped when running a slideshow. This also seemed to be completely random.

And then and suddenly without me changing anything...

Now all of a sudden no pictures have left/right arrows and all the slideshow does is display the same picture over and over again.

In desperation I went to Settings - System - Default apps - and changed the photo viewer from "photos - recommended for w10" to "Windows photo viewer" and that sort of works. I can cycle left or right to the previous or next picture but when I run the slideshow the picture is showed zoomed in quite a lot and pushed over to the right hand side. WTF?

UPDATE.

Sort of got it to work...

- Right click on a picture.
- Go to Open With and select Photos.
And now everything seems to work but God knows what went wrong.

Right clicking and selecting to open with Windows photo viewer - still gives the zoomed in and pushed over to the right hand side slideshow though.

What a pile of steaming do do this is :(

Check that your graphic drivers are OK. Download & install Faststone Image Viewer.

If that is important to you, install one that works as you like it. The default viewer is not really designed for serious photographers with expectations. It's just there because some people can't manage to install stuff.

I know it's annoying as it worked before. But that's just how the do do steams on W10 these days. You don't have to stay.

I use the Windows 10 viewer to quickly check through downloaded images and for a quick reference to select better ones for processing.

I too have had this same problem and I found the problem occurs more when you are viewing loads of images. I usually have to go through around 200 a session and find that it tends to happen the further in you go. I found the quickest answer is to reboot the PC even though I have a fairly decent and fast graphics card. It's a bug in the app.

Philip, I tried rebooting and turning it off and on again to no effect. Whatever knot it had got itself in was constant and affected folders with just single digit numbers of pictures in them. It's working for now, seemingly peffectly but I have zero expectation of it working reliably forever :D

I do get annoyed with stuff like this which really should have been spotted by Msoft. I don't see why I should have to download graphics drivers for a pc that's worked for years but I suppose that's what we have to do. It's not as if I'm using some no name Chinese rip off, this is a pc from one of the biggest names on the market and suddenly I need to download new graphics drivers? My word. Msoft didn't consider this happening all over the place, why would they? :D As always Msoft give us half developed buggy stuff and we're left to get on with it.

Ian, I just don't understand this attitude that this half working crap is acceptable and we should spend our time find ways around the bugs and faults. Such is life and Msoft.

It's a shame they're also managed to stop the old viewer working too. I'll take another look at all this once my blood has stopped boiling.

God knows how people who are in no way computer literate are supposed to manage with this rubbish.

Thanks for posting guys. Looks like I'll have to do as normal, forget about Msoft providing working products and live with the fact that their stuff just can't be relied upon and needs constant fettling.

I just needed to vent. Normal (poor) Msoft service continues. Rant over :(

Yes. Boiling blood is not good for you. But if you search around and install a nice picture viewer that works just right for you, it will be good for your health too. You won't have a constant worry that the problems will suddenly re-occur. And you'll have that smug feeling that you achieved something. And have to tell us all about how much better it is.

you know its the hardware vendors responsibility to develop new and functioning/reliable drivers for their devices and not MS, right?

anyway id not expect a lack of next/previous buttons to be a graphics driver issue. some people are saying it seems to be a bug relating to sort order, are they sorted by file name?

The "It's someone elses fault" excuse doesn't wash with me as it worked and then it didn't and the old viewer doesn't work either. There's patently a bit of a bug there somewhere.

If millions of devices are working pretty well with existing versions of Windows and Msoft develop a new version wouldn't you think they'd consider the implications for those millions of users? Apparently not.

Yes, best to avoid as much Msoft stuff as possible and that's what I've done. At some point in the future MS may fix it and I hope they do as, as I said, how are people who aren't even remotely computer literate supposed to manage with this half working software.

Isn't there an app store in W10 where you just have to click to install? Like on a grown-up OS?
