Can someone please tell me whats going on here, i loaded some photos from my memory card into photoshop, now normally i just get the RAW and JPEG files, but for some reason i got the XMP files as well, this has happened a couple of time's before which i'm sure shouldn't happen, but this time they came up as the little blue and red box's see in the photo, so can anyone explain why it is happening and how to rectify it, many thanks for your feedback

XMP files are side car files to RAW files, they hold the meta data, so any keywords/processing steps are stored in these.

One of the benefits of converting RAW files to DNGs is that all the data that would normally be stored in the XMP file is stored within the DNG, so you don't need to worry about keeping the RAW and the XMP together.

Yes i realize what their for, but it's just sometimes they show up and other times they don't, and they have never showed up like this before, it just seems odd

They usally only show if you have windows set to show hidden files in the folder you are browsing, normaly by default all folders are set to hide hidden files, but you may have inadvertantl changed it.

Or alternatvly if you have never had them appear before you may have changed the prefrences in Camera raw from save image setting in "Camera raw database " to "save as XMP files".

Ok thanks for the info, could you please tell me how to find and change these options in windows, and in camera raw.

In Windows explorer go to > tools > Folder options then click on Veiw and make sure "do not show hidden files is enabled .
I prefere to have mine showing.

Open a image in the raw converter then select the options tab ( horrizontal lines with dots at the end) and select Camera database if you do not want XMP sidecar files to be written to the images.
