Ok so took my 5100 out for the first time today...

Came home, uploaded them to my computer and as soon as i pulled up an image to look at it, all the colour went from it??

The picture went from being as i shot it to a dull weak version of the shot?

Is thi because i didnt put it through an editing program and windows couldnt view the Raw file properly??

Also GIMP cannot find the Raw files to edit??

cheers for any advice

Stu

I not sure but i think the thumbnail is represented by an embedded jpeg of the shot, but when its fully loaded up, it is showing the Raw file in its un processed form.

Not sure about this though.

This is quite normal for RAW files, I cant give you a technical reason for it but I shoot in RAW and this is the norm.

If it's an annoyance then try downloaded another image viewing programme

Not a problem, more a feature with RAW images. Basically, the RAW image is just that - the data off the sensor. When you shoot JPEG, the camera "develops" the RAW data into JPEG by applying image processing that will enhance contrast, colours, sharpness and the brightness curve. People are used to seeing the bright punchy JPEG outputs and are often disappointed by RAW images without any processing.

You will need to process them and save as a JPEG if you want the brighter, more usual JPEG style images.

As to Windows not being able to display the pictures - this is entirely normal as support for proprietary RAW formats isn't built into the OS. I'm not sure if there is a RAW plugin for Nikon, but the Canon RAW for 64 bit OS' only got released about a month ago!
