Hi,

It would appear that my Nikon D80 has died today. I was using at and the controls on the camera stopped working. After a short while they started working. About 2 hours later the batter instantly appeared to drain. It now looks like the mirror has locked half up half down (See picture).

I have tried putting in a fresh battery and there is now ERR showing on the status screen and the battery is showing as completely drain. Does anybody have any ideas if this problem is fixable or is the camera fit for the bin?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

Hi Adam,
Following are the options.

1. Did you use the mirror lock option for cleaning?
If yes...unlock it

2. Try to reset the camera to factory settings.

3. You can try changing the Manual/Auto switch in the side of the camera

4. set camera to bulb then press and hold shutter.

( By any chance did you try to use any Non AIs lenses or any third party olden day lenses)

Hi there is an err message on screen. Did not use mirror lock up and pressing the shutter does nothing even a fresh battery is showing as empty on the camera (flashing 1 bar). I was using the supplied kit lens and it had not been off the camera all day

Hi Adam,
did you try other options mentioned in my previous post.

Also what's the err code number?

Its always worth trying to clean the contacts on the lens or trying another lens with it

Hi,

I have tried with another lens and the problem still exists. I cannot access any of the menu options as the err message flashes whenever I try to do anything and the battery is also showing as completely drained, despite the fact that it was a freshly charged battery that I had installed into the camera.

I have also tried changing the manual/auto switch on the camera and it still did not work. How would I find the error code number. The message I get is Err flashing in time with the battery indicator whenever I press any buttons on the camera.

Thanks

Adam

Try cleaning the contacts on the battery with some lens cleaner and a cotton bud. Also give the internal battery contacts in the camera a quick wipe. It sounds to me like the battery is not making contact properly, hence the camera thinking there is no sufficient power for the camera to operate.

How would I find the error code number.

Hi Adam,

When the err flashing in the top lcd, the sameway if you view through the view finder, if there's a err code, you can see that inside flashing in yellow letters.

Also try to remove the memory card. Also check whether you battery holder cover/lock works properly.

Hi Adam:

The ERR blinking is for camera malfunction, the advice in the manual is to Press shutter release button, if error persists contact Nikon Service Rep. Not much help I am afraid

It sounds very similar to my experience 2 mths ago, if its the same then its into the repair shop. . Had to take mine in to be fixed, still waiting....

These guys clicky thing used to be really helpful when I lived in Stone..... was a few years ago though.

Hi, Just a bit of an update on this. The camera is working again. It looks like there was a problem with the battery/grip not reporting the power levels correctly. I guess the battery went flat whilst the shutter was in operation and this caused the mirror to lock.

I was going to replace the camera and figured that I had better give it another go before going out to get something else and lo and behold it was working. Will keep an eye on it and see if I have any more problems. I don’t know why the errors were cleared after this period of time as I tried new batteries etc at the time. It would be nice if all problems could be fixed by leaving them for a few months

Thanks for your suggestions on how to resolve the issue they were a huge help.

Adam

Sounds like a result then. D80 is a lovely camera, it would be a shame if it died completely.
