Problem with my Sigma 70-300mm

Hi,

I recently bought a Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DL Macro for Canon lens from ebay at what I thought was a bargain price of £60.00.

Upon trying it out it will not focus and then when I do actually take a picture it comes up witht eh error message "err99" "shooting is not possible, turn the power on and off or re-install the battery".

Of course I've done both but still to no avail. Has anyone else had this problem or have I been sold a dodgy lens?

Any help is appreciated.
 
I'm a bit of an amateur but had a look and I dont think it has an aperture ring or either that is doesnt have the ability to lock it?
 
there is an aperture ring on a canon lens mount!

make sure the contacts between lens and body are clean. Use a eraser to get dirt and grime off the contacts.
 
looking at mine now, it doesnt have a lock, only Normal/Macro options but you need to extend the lens to 200mm+ to switch to macro.

Maybe you are thinking of the nikon lens?
 
i've heard of this before,
and i think ( i maybe wrong) that the lens you have is for a film camera only and its not compatible with DSLRs

like i said i maybe wrong !
 
Doesnt have the aperture numbers near the mount.

Cleaned the contacts twice but still getting the message? :thinking:
 
Tigre I think you may actually be right. Looking at my reciept more closely the type says SLR and not DSLR.

I came across this problem some years back, it is not isolated to DSLR's as it started being a problem with sigma lenses on ETTL cameras (My EOS 33 for example)

From what I gathered at the time the electronics in the camera moved on/changed and as a result the older lens could not interpret certain comunications from the camera. This issue was specifically canon/sigma and often if you purchased the lens from new sigma would rechip to work with newer cameras free of charge.
