Had this since I updated to the new OS a couple of weeks ago. Before when you wanted to send a file with an email or upload a picture/file (dropbox/FB/photobucket etc) you clicked on the button and a pop up would appear and you would select file(s). All done in seconds. Since then, when you click the paperclip or upload button, the whirling rainbow wheel appears and generally lasts for around 45 seconds and then you select file, but everything seems slower and laggy if selecting more than 1.

Apple forum has been no help, any ideas here?

Take a look at your log files. It reads to me like it is waiting on something in your file dialogue that it cannot open. Could be a network drive, iCloud/Dropbox/sync/live/google connection? Perhaps a photo library in photos or aperture or Lightroom that isn't responding.

It could be many things, your log files will hold the key information on what it is waiting for.

What av are you using? If sophos then change it. I had issues after upgrading, specifically time machine backups taking an age. I deleted sophos and now using avira.

It's any file, so if I want to attach a pages doc or PDF from desktop, or an image from a folder on desktop it's the same.

None.

Hence my thoughts are that it is something in finder, and therefore in the file open dialog that causes this delay. It comes across like it is waiting for something. Open up the Console app and take a look what messages are flying past when you try and do this action.

Are you using wifi or wired? If using wired then TURN THE WIFI OFF. Macs can be really dumb about things like this.

Lots!!! Anything I should be looking for, all gobbledegook to me!!!

Gave up - reinstalled a previous backup with previous IOS from time machine, now just a few seconds to select the file, so has to be something about Sierra?

Most likely something that is incompatible with Sierra and trying to get to it in the background. I'm not on a Mac at the moment so can't take a look into Console to see what processes it opens when you open a file/save dialog. But I suspect all anti-virus, cloud storage links (icloud, dropbox, google drive, microsoft, sync etc), image libraries (remember photos, iphoto, aperture, lightroom all link through there as well).
