Problem with 5x4 camera-not exposing with flash

I'm having a lot of problems with a 5x4 camera (a Linhof Master Technika). Every time I shoot polaroid with a flash it doesn't expose but when I shoot without a flash it does expose. I can't figure out what the problem is. The shutter speed is 125 and aperture 16. The flash fires but the polaoid is black. There is a lever on the lens near an 'M' and an 'X'. It is set to 'M'. Could this be the problem?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Please help.
 
Not sure which lens you have exactly but X is usually the mark for flash sync.

I take it the flash is firing but you not getting the light on the film. You should give it a try with the lever to X as that could well be needed.
