Problem Grey Areas

I have taken some photos practising on my friends daughter I am trying to whiten the background but the area behind her fine hair stays grey when its printed onto the photo paper, am I onto a no brainer trying to have a completely white background?

The idea is to get the background white with the lights during the shoot rather than try and "paint" it white after. It is possible, but you'll need to cut the subject out using a varied amount of methods and plonk it on a white background.

I agree with TCR about getting it right with lighting but its not always possible when your limited with space and lights, the method I use which I find the most realistic is Zack Arias's method using the dodge tool, you can still keep some of the shadow detail making it look a little more natural.
