Ok guys.... Problem

The other day I got my first studio light. Nothing special, just to muck about with and hone my skills.

I set it up. and solved a few problems

My entry level sony a230 doesnt have a port for the sync cable, but luckily I had a hot shoe adapter that did and so put it on.

Shebaam...everything working fine.

A couple of portrait shots of my son..no problem

Dog walks into the room....gets inbetween the power cable and the sync cable and as i tell him to freeze and go to hold him, he Bolts, ripping out the sync cable and camera lands on the floor.

After having a few choice words face to face with a canine I calmed down and replugged everything....Studio light failed to fire. Unplug sync cable and replug and light fires! woopetity woop woop!



fast forward a few days, I set everything up again and it fails to fire.

I have tried just using the light sensor to fire it but unfortunately, as far as I can see I am unable to disable the first of the two flashes from my on camera flash and hence the flash doesnt sync with the shutter.

Is there any way that anyone can think of that I can test the individual components to find the fault ( I have no multimeter). As far as I can think it can only be the hot shoe adapter, sync lead, sync plug or worst case female port in the studio light.

Any ideas are appreciated. Thank you in advance

Hi Derek first thing i would check would be the sync lead they are always playing up. check for broken or loose connection on the adapter, or get yourself a radio trigger of ebay for around £12 quid they are cheap as chips and work like a dream hth mike
oh and no leads for dogs to trip on

I had considered one but wasn't sure if they were camera specific as nothing else seems to work with sonys

The Sony/Minolta Hot shoe is a bit of a PITA, but there are trigger sets that are made for it - the ones linked by dinorock are, and as they have the sync adaptor shoudl be fine for your studio.
