18-70 vs 18-135 lens...

I'm a total noob at this so far, but it seems that these 2 lenses both have pros and cons and I can't for the life of me make my mind up which is best!!

I will be buying one of these in conjunction with my first ever SLR (just to give you some background).

Any views would be appreciated as I can't bloody work out which is better!

I'd guess these are Nikon options so I can't help you but hopefully someone will soon :)

As a general point zooms with less range tend to have better image quality than zooms with huge ranges like 18-250. Don't know if that applies here.

What make and model of lens are they?

/robert beat me to it.

Sorry, I'm referring to Nikon lenses here.

The info I've had so far is that the picture quality difference between the two is negligable, however the 18-70 is preferred due to the distance window (if that's explained correctly).

I just wasn't sure whether the bigger range would be better to have than the window (as I don't fully understand what that does because I haven't been able to have a look at it yet).

Sorry if this doesn't make much sense :help:

I have the 18-70 and it's a superb lens. it sits on my camera all the time, superb image quality.

I was toying with the idea of getting the 18-135 (or even the 18-200). It boils down to how much you want to spend, and what you need/want.

If you're after an every day lens go for the 18-70. If you're going to want a semi telephoto lens then save your pennies and get a Nikon 18-200 VR lens, it's a great piece of kit.

For info on the 18-135 & 18-200 go here: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/18-135.htm

Take a look at a review of th 18-70 here:
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/1870.htm

Ive got the D80 "kit" and chose the 18-135. Since buying other lenses, i can see just how poor this lens is, it suffers badly from lens flare and has zero character, i wish i had chosen the 18-70 now!

The images are ok but really nothing special, i try to use this lens as little as possible!

I can't compare the two as I don't have the 18-135 but I can say I've been quite impressed with the 18-70 kit on my D80 given the fact that it is a kit lens and relatively cheap if bought separately.

I bought my wife the 18-70 with her D40x and it is a great lens. Sorry can't compare it with the 18-135 BUT I have not heard much good said about the 18-135 kit lens.

You could always back it up with the Nikon AF-S 55-200mm f/4-5.6 G ED DX VR later which costs just under £150 on the internet.

If you can get a good deal on the camera body on its own mullrallyesport is selling the 18-55 lens on here at the moment and has just reduced it!

Thanks again for the help, it is much needed and appreciated!!

I know i'm faffing loads about what to get but I am skint and can't afford any let downs!

dunno what I'd do without your help!
