Probably a very simple answer to this!

Edit My Images
Yes
Just bought my first DSLR, a Canon 1000D with 18-55 IS kit.

I am getting frustrated with the pictures after they have been transferred to the computer.
About a quarter of the shots seem to be chopped in half, with different light in each part and the two parts not corresponding. (Not sure how else to describe it)
The pictures are fine on the viewfinder and fine on the tv, but not on the computer.

I re installed all the software, but same thing keeps happening.
What am I doing wrong?

Hi Jemma,

So you're saying that the images you download are half light and the other half is dark? If they look fine in the camera and on the TV but like this on the computer then the images could be getting corrupted during the download process. I can't be sure without looking at an example though, would it be possible to show us one?

Are the pictures affected by the computer? Is there a way of putting onto the computer then reloading to the camera to see if the actual image is affected?

Chris

These 3 are typical of the problem.

This doesn't happen all the time, many shots are fine.
There is no way of telling which pictures it's going to happen to either - all look normal on the viewfinder.

I'm also a complete novice on the computer, so make it simple please!:)

Now that's odd. I'd be inclined to take the camera back to the shop, but maybe there's some technophiles here who can give better advice.

eek
That's definately corruption, we just have to work out where in the chain it's happening.

What memory card do you use? have you got another you can try?

How do you get the photos from the camera onto the computer, via a cable from the camera to computer, or by taking the card out of the camera and putting it in a card reader attached to the computer?

If the pictures are fine on the camera and when shown on the TV using the camera, it does look like the issue is corruption from the camera/memory card to the PC. Got a spare memory card to rule that out?

Chris

The memory card is a Sandisk UltraII SDHC 4GB, I got it at the same time as the camera and don't have another to try.

With my old camera,I used to remove the card and put it directly into the computer to download pictures, but can't do it with this one.
Have to use the cable supplied.

It seems strange - not sure where the corruptions is happening.

Where are you - I'm sure there is someone who would be prepared to pop around with a card and try a different one.

Where did you get the card - there are lots of fake sandisks around.

Interesting that the embedded thumbnail in the exif (which is I think what is shown on the camera) is fine. If you zoom in on camerA display does that look ok?

Hmmm

It could be a number of things really
1) the camera may be faulty (seems unlikely as viewing them on cam screen and on TV is fine, if they were corrupted on the card you'd think it'd show up)
2)Faulty memory card (seems unlikely again, same reason as above)
3)Driver issue, this could be a conflict with something else on your computer or just dodgy drivers, try dowloading new drivers from the Canon website. Try it on another computer.
4)Faulty USB port, try another port or another computer.

It could be any of the reasons above really. Try to borrow a card reader and/or a SD card from family or friends.

Try these things in order....
A)If using a different SD card fixes the problem via cable transfer then it's your SD card's fault.
B)If using another USB port on your computer fixes the problem then it's a faulty USB port.
C)If using a card reader fixes the problem then it's something to do with the software, drivers or maybe even the camera's USB transfer bits.
D)If using another computer fixes the problem then it could be a software or driver conflict on the first computer.

If they play ok via camera to TV then I'd say the camera and card are fine. That leaves the USB cable or the USB socket on the PC causing the corruption. Try the cable in a different socket, if that doesnt work, then try a different USB cable.

where are you located jemma, has i have a spare card (assuming a 350D and a 1000D share the same card) and a couple off usb cables that your more than welcome to try out at home etc..

but cant help in diagnosis sorry :(

Try using a standard memory card rather than the high capacity one (maybe from a PDA or phone). You should then be able to download it via a standard card reader. Alternatively, pop into pound-land and get one of their card readers, they work with the HC cards. Try transferring the images with the card reader. It definitely looks like corruption, and I'd guess it's being caused when downloading to the PC otherwise they wouldn't appear OK on the camera screen and TV.

Have you tried downloading any of the images a second time and comparing them. If it is corruption during the transfer I doubt you'd duplicate the exact effect on the same picture each time.

then try a different USB cable.

That would be my advice, I've seen somethig similar (though not identical - horizontal gaps in the pictures) before and it was resolved by using a different cable.

First thing to do is to format the card (in the camera) then try some more pictures.

No idea what it could be, but the one thing I have noiticed in the first image is that it seems to be split into 4 areas: Normal finished colour, then blue, green and red. Relevant?

Thank you for your ideas.
Will borrow another card tomorrow and have a laptop coming over to try that.
Have already formatted the card - no difference.
Will post results tomorrow.
Thanks everyone.

Just tried another couple, same thing, - BUT also just re transferred a few of the previous corrupted shots and they are ok on second download.
What does that mean?
Off to reload all the pictures I thought I had lost!

Sounds like a USB cable then, why not buy a card reader?

Definitely a cable problem. Probably been kinked at some point in its life. Worth investing in a cheap card reader, hang on don't the Sandisk SDHC cards not come with a USB adapter that effectively acts like a USB Pen when you plug the card into it? Am sure the one I got for my phone had one with it.

Usually, results like this are down to a duff card from my experience.
However, if they are looking fine a second time you download them, then i think its something to do with transfering them from card/camera to PC. I agree with everyone, pop out and get a card reader, can be had for about £5, and try that. Will probably transfer the files quicker too

Mike

Latest update - looks as if it's the card at fault.
Tried two different cables into two different USB ports, all with the same corrupted results.
I down loaded each picture separately today, some worked first time, but some took two or trree downloads to get the un corrupted picture I could see on the viewfinder.
The card I got hold of today didn't fit, so got a cheap SD card from Tesco tonight and have just done a dozen or so shots to test and all downloaded perfectly first time.
Will have a proper test tomorrow.
Thanks for all the suggestions.:)

I have taken ~2000 shots with a nikon D40 and a Sandisk III 2GB SD and I had one (1) picture that exhibited a similar problem to that.... Was fine on the camera , but on the computer was like the middle dog one, but vertical.

I use a multicard reader to read the card. I forgot about it until now.. I got the card from amazon.

On second thoughts it may have been a 2GB Sandisk 'blue' card that had the issue. I got them for a fiver from play.com.

I did think that it could be the card. Well, im glad that you have found the result of the problem :)
