Probably a silly question....

Okay forgive me if this is a stupid question but...

If I take a snapshot on my Canon Powershot S5 IS in full auto mode, the shot comes out nicely exposed. However if I use the exact same settings but in full manual mode, the shot comes out horribly under-exposed to the point you can barely see what the subject is.

Both picture properties are identical, but the two shots clearly aren't:

Am I missing something, or is it a camera fault? :(

Sorry, just checked the EXIF, so ignore the above!!

Almost looks like your flash didn't fire in the second shot.....

Thanks for the quick replies! Yep, ISO 200 on both shots & the flash definitely fired on both too. Although i see what your saying, that's exactly what it looks like.

I reckon the flash has fired at different strengths, or you had it covered in the second one by a stray finger or something.....that's the only variable I can think of as all the settings match in the EXIF!!

That was my initial thought too about the flash output, but i double checked, and checked again, they were both definitely the same. :(

Anyone have any ideas please? I'm guessing my camera is knackered?

Flash did not fire in the second shot ?

Exif for the first reads "Flash - fired", Exif for the second reads "Flash - On" it does not say fired for the second.

If you're on full manual mode using the flash increase the aperture to maybe something like f/8, and set the shutter speed to about 1/125 Sec.

The lower f/ numbers increase the flash brightness, and the lower shutter speeds increase ambient brightness.

Mess around with those settings and see how it goes :)
